  • Frost Burned: Mercy Thompson, Book 7

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Patricia Briggs
    • Narrated By Lorelei King
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Mercy Thompson's life has undergone a seismic change. Becoming the mate of Adam Hauptman - the charismatic Alpha of the local werewolf pack - has made her a stepmother to his daughter, Jesse, a relationship that brings moments of blissful normalcy to Mercy's life. But on the edges of humanity, what passes for a minor mishap on an ordinary day can turn into so much more.... After an accident in bumper-to-bumper traffic, Mercy and Jesse can't reach Adam - or anyone else in the pack for that matter. They've all been abducted.....

ShySusan says: "One of the best urban fantasy series"
"I think I might be done with Mercy :("
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would always recommend a Patricia Briggs book to a friend. She is a solid author, and I love what she does. That being said, for me a series can only go so far. I'm kind of over Mercy. I love the world that was built for this series, and I love the Alpha and Omega series, I'm just kind of done with Mercy as a main character. I would love to see more spin offs! As I said, I love the the world, and I love the characters, I just don't want to ruin Mercy by getting bored with her story.

If you’ve listened to books by Patricia Briggs before, how does this one compare?

    Excellent execution as always.

Was Frost Burned worth the listening time?

  • DEAD: The Ugly Beginning

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By TW Brown
    • Narrated By Andrew McFerrin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The unthinkable has happened. The dead are walking! Humanity's fragile thread may be reaching its bitter end. Individuals and groups struggle to survive...some at any cost. Will there be anybody left? Or, is this just...The Ugly Beginning?

Mike Naka says: "extremely graphic and brutal"
"Written by convicted sex offender.... and it shows"
What would have made DEAD: The Ugly Beginning better?

So, I knew that the author was a convicted sex offender, and that it had something to do with his children (step children??). But in his blog he said that he was in recovery and doing what he could to heal himself. So, I thought, ok, give the guy a chance. Bad idea.

I've read a lot (and I do mean a LOT) of zpoc books. Everything from the silly to the serious, and I can forgive a lot. But I have never NEVER come across so many references to rape, child rape, and violence on women and children as I did when I read this book. Seriously **SPOILER** a high school teacher keeping high school girl zombies in a room so that he can have sex with them??? What the actual?

I have a really hard time believing that this book wasn't a parole violation, and I would do anything to have books by this author stop taking up room in my "recommended reads" section. yuck.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I don't know, but I'm going to need a palate cleanser.

Have you listened to any of Andrew McFerrin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no, and I had no problem with the performance.

What character would you cut from DEAD: The Ugly Beginning?

maybe just a couple of the rapists... Seriously, does this guy think that the end of the world will come and suddenly every man is going to go a raping?

  • The Subtle Knife: His Dark Materials, Book 2

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Philip Pullman
    • Narrated By Philip Pullman, full cast

In this stunning sequel to The Golden Compass, the intrepid Lyra finds herself in a shimmering, haunted otherworld, Cittagazze, where soul-eating Specters stalk the streets and wingbeats of distant angels sound against the sky. But she is not without allies: 12-year-old Will Parry, fleeing for his life after taking another's, has also stumbled into this strange new realm.

Geoffrey says: "The second book in a fantastic trilogy!"
    "absolutely fantastic"

What a relief to be able to *read* a story that appeals to us athiests. Not only is this a wonderful series with amazing characters, and a fascinating new approach to childrens lit, it's not bogged down with the same ol' C.S. Lewis style religious drivel. I didn't feel the creepy sticky undertones of christianity trying to reach out from between the words and snatch me up. Instead it is blatantly obvious and a very nice change.

Plus the narrating team is amazing!!! Really, a good time for all.

And if the kids can't handle their faith being challanged a bit, then how can a parent feel safe even letting them leave the house.
