A very interesting story, well written and well read. I'm looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.
Jon Smith does a good job on an excellent story but the editing is so choppy it makes it difficult to follow. Dickens and Smith are great but it needs better editing.
This book was so good it made me wish I had majored in chemistry. When my 10 year old grandson is a little older I hope to inspire him with it!
Haber and Bosch were equally impressive.
Same as above.
The story of the fire and the beginnings of the Forest Service were interesting. The biased political portrayals could have been written by the DNC with assistance from the Sierra Club.
It should have been a much more objective history.
Yes! Although it is a painful chapter in history, it is one that we need to learn from. All voters should be familiar with this era.
There are many lessons here to be learned. Unfortunately, history is barely taught in schools these days and the history that is taught is molded to fit a particular political view. This book gives you the facts and leaves it to you to decide what could have been differently. Churchill called WWII the "unnecessary war". Had the world only listened to him millions of lives could have been saved.
Never let it happen again!
WWII was the worst war in the world's history and it could have been avoided. Everyone should read this book and others like it to understand how.
Above average. It is so good to get a macro perspective on history. We spend so much time looking at history through a microscope and making judgments as to the right or wrong of each situation that we completely miss the good or bad of the results on society as a whole.
There were many of them relating to the long term benefits of conquests of various peoples even though the immediate effect on the conquered may have been terrible.
He reads much better than I do but beyond that, he frees the mind to think about what is being said.
It greatly broadened my perspective on history.
I'm looking forward to other Thomas Sowell books.
We're all aware of the Holocaust to some degree. This book takes you much farther than common knowledge. It goes into painful detail on the sins of both Hitler and Stalin. This is not the kind of book you listen to for enjoyment. It is for information.
I have never read a book like it.
Good perfomance though maybe a bit monotone.
You should read this book to comprehend the evil of Stalin and Hitler.
I have read many books about WWII but have long thought I needed a better understanding of WWI and how it led to WWII. This book fills that gap and then some.
I really appreciated the way the author did "background" on the various cultures and participants. This greatly increased my knowledge of Europe and the eastern empires.
As a history book there were no character performances but he did a great job in reading it.
The length of the book would prohibit that but it would have been great to have the time to listen to larger segments at a time.
I wish I had listened to this book before reading anything of WWII. If I had, all my reading of WWII would have been more meaningful.
It gave a great deal of insight into the period.
Undoubtedly the 14 years in prison.
The Count of Monte Cristo
That would have required missing a great deal of sleep. It was much more compelling toward the end.
The reader, Alexandre Dumas, made it much easier to get through a book of this length.
I didn't read the print version.
The fire at the bridge after all the other chaos was heart breaking.
You would have to be heartless not to be touched by this tragedy.
It is good to read about weather events in history to put current weather anomolies in perspective. There have always been strange weather events.
A well written, well read, unbiased, unvarnished history of the period.
I am currently interested in the WWII era and this book covers it well.
He doesn't just read the book he adds the necessary emphasis without adding a bias.
The ruthlessness of the Japanese was particularly interesting.
