As a social satire, this novel is absolutely brilliant, though not much of anything else. Static characters and nonsensical plot serves as a caricature of every western pop cultural, from Reality TV shows, to Warcraft, to Windows Vista, to Copyright laws to be mocked, I love this very lighthearted novel.

What I liked about Shelby Foote is his the detailed description of military tactics, the political background and the political intrigue. But the problem with this version of the history is it is slightly biased toward the South, also because it was written before the Civil Right Movement, he could get away with dismissing Massachusetts 54 Regiment using 2 sentences.

I don't think I like his style of history, but yhere is still a volume 3.

First of a three volume magnum opus, this book gives a fairly even handed account of the war from the perspective of both side, the first volume covers the first two years of the American civil war, the author seemed to have bought the Southern argument that the war was about State right, and not slavery, which I disagree. But otherwise, an exciting volume to read.

I'd have to, there are quite a bit of information to diggest, so this book might have to be listened to more than once.

The audiobook version of this kind must necessarily suffer from the inaccessibility of names, places and technical terminology. So, I'd say no.

The book is useful as far as being a beginner's guide to medieval history is concerned, it does not go into detail, just jumping from one theme to another, so those interested in particular themes can do further research. It also suffers from the all too often a problem of Eurocentrism, the thousand year between the Fall of Western Roman Empire 472 a,d and the fall of Eastern Roman Empire in 1454 in China is between Tang and Ming Dynasty. a lot of things happened there too. In short, it's a folly to try to squeeze a thousand years in a 18 hour history book.
