Nine hundred thousand years ago, something annihilated the Amarantin civilization just as it was on the verge of discovering space flight. Now one scientist, Dan Sylveste, will stop at nothing to solve the Amarantin riddle before ancient history repeats itself. With no other resources at his disposal, Sylveste forges a dangerous alliance with the cyborg crew of the starship Nostalgia for Infinity. But as he closes in on the secret, a killer closes in on him because the Amarantin were destroyed for a reason.

    "Good sci-fi...slow start...big ending"

This is the second book I've listened to in this universe. Both of them have started slowly. I had to stop and come back to finish both of them because of the slow start. That being said, the beginning is not bad, just slow. The middle was good and the ending was great. I recommend the book, but only if you're willing to stick with it to the end. There are some interesting sci-fi ideas in the story. Overall I'm glad that I purchased it and just purchased the next one in the series.

  • Plague of the Dead: The Morningstar Strain, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Z. A. Recht
    • Narrated By Oliver Wyman

The end begins with a viral outbreak unlike anything mankind has ever encountered before. The infected are subject to delirium, fever, a dramatic increase in violent behavior, and a one-hundred percent mortality rate. Death. But it doesn't end there. The victims return from death to walk the earth. When a massive military operation fails to contain the plague of the living dead it escalates into a global pandemic.

"Good zombie story, will get the next one"

This was a good zombie story. There was plenty of action, despair and seemed to be well thought out. There was an issue with one of the plot lines. It didn't seem to be developed quite as much as the other line. While not perfect, it was good enough that I will purchase the next one in the series.

  • Day by Day Armageddon: Beyond Exile

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 40 mins)
    • By J. L. Bourne
    • Narrated By Jay Snyder
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The first book of Day by Day Armageddon took us deep into the mind of a military officer and survivor as he made a New Year's resolution to start keeping a journal. The man kept his resolution and brought to us the fall of humanity, day by day. We see the man transition from the life that you and I live to the prospect of fighting for his very survival against the overwhelming hordes of the dead. We see him bleed, we see him make mistakes, we witness him evolve.

Richard L. Everson says: "Very Much Surprised"
"Good story - Can't wait for the next one"

The story is as good or maybe better than the previous book. There is never a dull moment in this new macabre world of the undead. It also leaves the possibility for a third book. I can't wait. The narrator was also very good. If you liked the first book even a little, then this is a worthwhile listen.

  • Dune Messiah

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Frank Herbert
    • Narrated By Scott Brick, Katherine Kellgren, Euan Morton, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The second Dune installment explores new developments on the planet Arrakis, with its intricate social order and strange, threatening environment. Dune Messiah picks up the story of the man known as Muad'Dib, heir to a power unimaginable, bringing to fruition an ambition of unparalleled scale: the centuries-old scheme to create a superbeing who reigns not in the heavens but among men. But the question is: DO all paths of glory lead to the grave?

    Andrew says: "A nice continuation"
    "Dune like"

Scott Brick has a minimal part in narrating the book which is a bummer for me because he is one of my favorites. The story is good, but it not near as good and wide reaching as the original book. Probably worth a credit, but I'd go with the Prequil books before this (Butlarian Jihad, Machine Crusade, etc...).

  • Starship Troopers

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 4 mins)
    • By Robert A. Heinlein
    • Narrated By Lloyd James
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Join the Army and See the Universe. That is the motto of The Third Space War, also known as The First Interstellar War, but most commonly as The Bug War. In one of Robert Heinlein's most controversial best sellers, a recruit of the future goes through the toughest boot camp in the universe - and into battle with the Terrain Mobile Infantry against mankind's most alarming enemy.

    Michael says: "Well Aged Heinlein"
    "A must listen"

Great book. Wonderful story of camaraderie and the relationship between service members. It always moves me when I read or listen.

  • Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Alfred Lansing
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October, 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

David says: "Superb in so many ways"

What a great story. This book is worth the money. I find it quite interesting that this happened almost 100 years ago. The true depth of human character and willpower is displayed throughout this book. I wonder if we still have that kind of heart in today's society.

  • Dies the Fire: A Novel of the Change

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By S. M. Stirling
    • Narrated By Todd McLaren
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Michael Havel was flying over Idaho en route to the holiday home of his passengers when the plane's engines inexplicably died, forcing a less than perfect landing in the wilderness. And, as Michael leads his charges to safety, he begins to realize that the engine failure was not an isolated incident.

Michelle says: "Unusual for a post-apocalyptic novel."
    "Interesting but too easy"

The book has a good plot and starts out well. Action scenes are described well and the politics are interesting. However, things seem a little too easy for the protagonists and this single fact brought what was a good book down to only three stars. I am glad I listened, but might not listen to the sequels.
