  • The House at Tyneford

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Natasha Solomons
    • Narrated By Justine Eyre
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

It’s the spring of 1938 and no longer safe to be a Jew in Vienna. Nineteen-year-old Elise Landau is forced to leave her glittering life of parties and champagne to become a parlor maid in England. She arrives at Tyneford, the great house on the bay, where servants polish silver and serve drinks on the lawn. But war is coming, and the world is changing. When Kit, the son of Tyneford’s master, returns home, he and Elise strike up an unlikely friendship that will transform Tyneford - and Elise - forever. An irresistible World War II story of a forbidden romance in a great English country house.

Emily - Audible says: "Mixed Opinion"
"Tyneford: A time and place in transition."
What made the experience of listening to The House at Tyneford the most enjoyable?

The story makes you care about the charactors. You become part of the household and share in their experience.

What did you like best about this story?

The way it takes you along with it. It unfolds before your eyes and you live it. Feel it.

Have you listened to any of Justine Eyre’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have never heard Justine Eyre before. She is adaquate, but not my favorite. There were times when I thought her "take" on how the charactors would speak was weak. But as I say, she is fine and in no way takes away from the very good stroy line.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It broke my heart at times. There were moments it made me smile and long for a simpler time.

    Any additional comments?

If you like stories about England and English country houses, stories about the war years in Great Britan, or about the courage of people in trying times, you will enjoy this book. I did.

  • Lady of Ashes: Lady of Ashes, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Christine Trent
    • Narrated By Polly Lee
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Only a woman with an iron backbone could succeed as an undertaker in Victorian London, but Violet Morgan takes great pride in her trade. While her husband, Graham, is preoccupied with elevating their station in society, Violet is cultivating a sterling reputation for Morgan Undertaking. She is empathetic, well-versed in funeral fashions, and comfortable with death's role in life - until its chilling rattle comes knocking on her own front door.

Sara says: "A Most Unusual Book!"
    "Undertaking as vehicle"
If you could sum up Lady of Ashes in three words, what would they be?

    rainy day listen

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

No, the plot was rather plodding; but interesting none the less.

What three words best describe Polly Lee’s performance?

    One word will suffice: Mediocre

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it would be too tedious for one sitting. Okay to keep you company on a short car trip, or on a walk.

    Any additional comments?

The story was really pretty interesting, if heavy handed. Poor Polly Lee though, seriously, all Americans do not sound as if they have dead pan nasal voices. Her treatment of a Tidewater Southern accent was dreadful! It was more Okie or Arkansas than the soft, lilting Southern accent of Virginia. The story would have been much better read by Katherine Kellgrin. (sp?)
