  • Did Jesus Exist?: The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Bart D. Ehrman
    • Narrated By Walter Dixon
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Large numbers of atheists, humanists, and conspiracy theorists are raising one of the most pressing questions in the history of religion: "Did Jesus exist at all?" Was he invented out of whole cloth for nefarious purposes by those seeking to control the masses? Or was Jesus such a shadowy figure - far removed from any credible historical evidence - that he bears no meaningful resemblance to the person described in the Bible? In Did Jesus Exist? historian and Bible expert Bart Ehrman confronts these questions, vigorously defends the historicity of Jesus, and provides a compelling portrait of the man from Nazareth.

    Jacobus says: "Vintage Ehrman"
    "Beyond Interesting!"
If you could sum up Did Jesus Exist? in three words, what would they be?

    Insightful, balanced, authoritative

What was one of the most memorable moments of Did Jesus Exist??

Well, it's not a story. I think the timeline of New Testament authors and their influences upon one another were very well documented and explained. I really appreciated the author's creation of context in terms of the languages, customs, and circumstances (political, military, etc) of the times.

Which character – as performed by Walter Dixon – was your favorite?

Not really applicable to this type of treatise.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I liked to take my time with it and listen and re-listen to the variety of teaching points made. Would love to take a course from this guy.

    Any additional comments?

This is an interesting and compelling argument that furthers one's understanding of the historical Jesus. Terrific job of being respectful to opinions and positions of others on this subject. As a practicing Catholic, in no way did this book diminish my faith or enthusiasm .... indeed it deepened both. Great documentation and use of logic and reason and a good example of historical research methods as well. Just a treat. Congratulations to the author and all who choose to read this. Wise choice.

This level of scholarship is sorely needed in our divinity schools in this country.

  • A Conflict of Interest: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Adam Mitzner
    • Narrated By David LeDoux
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Alex Miller is a criminal defense lawyer leading the life he always imagined. At thirty-five, he is the youngest partner at New York City's most prestigious law firm, with a beautiful wife and a perfect daughter. When Alex's father suddenly passes away, Alex is introduced to Michael Ohlig, a rich and powerful man who holds an almost mythical place in his family lore. But Alex is surprised when Ohlig admits that he's in serious legal trouble, accused of crimes involving hundreds of millions of dollars.

    "Tip for the Movie!"
What did you love best about A Conflict of Interest?

It was a very engaging story and not the usual run of the mill.

What did you like best about this story?

manageable number of characters and just a very tight story. i like the them of "who's in charge" in terms of attorney or defendant in criminal trial strategy and decision making.

    Which scene was your favorite?

.... the visit by Alex to Michael Ohlig in prison ..... sweet.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

don't know about the tag line, but i do not that Ray Stevens is the only option to play the role of Michael Ohlig ..... i pictured him all the time as that particular villain.

    Any additional comments?

i will recommend and share the book often.

  • Go the F--k to Sleep

    • UNABRIDGED (6 mins)
    • By Adam Mansbach, Ricardo Cortes (cover illustration)
    • Narrated By Samuel L. Jackson

Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) rocks this mock bedtime story, capturing a hilarious range of emotions as the voice of a father struggling to get his child to sleep. Go the F**k to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland.

Darwin8u says: "Read the F--king REVIEW!"
What disappointed you about Go the F--k to Sleep?

Why is it that I could not get this movie out of my head: Snakes on a Plane? Except the magic S.L. Jackson line was used one time there! I am no prude by any measure -- I spend a small fortune in raucous comedy clubs. But this poem just got tiresome and as such it lost its humor value as it wore on. Sorry. It was neither cute nor funny. This is the only time on that I felt a tad ripped off even for the modest price.

What could Adam Mansbach and Ricardo Cortes (cover illustration) have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    probably saved it for u-tube

Have you listened to any of Samuel L. Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

yes and not nearly as enjoyable.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

disappointment but not to the point of suicide.
