Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, Welsh - enter a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, up to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs. As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion.

Highly anticipated this, but it seemed to drag. Not a fit sequel, in my opinion. Maybe the third will be more enjoyable.

  • Imagine: How Creativity Works

From the best-selling author of How We Decide comes a sparkling and revelatory look at the new science of creativity. Shattering the myth of muses, higher powers, even creative “types”, Jonah Lehrer demonstrates that creativity is not a single gift possessed by the lucky few. It’s a variety of distinct thought processes that we can all learn to use more effectively. Lehrer reveals the importance of embracing the rut, thinking like a child, daydreaming productively, and adopting an outsider’s perspective.

As a big fan of the author, I expected to like this book, but I LOVED IT. As an artisit. it is often hard to explain to others how creativity emerges, but this validated my many suspicions as to the processes that drive creative thought. As a scientist, I felt this was an excellent lay-oriented presentaion of some of the recent work in the field of brain science. My only crtiocism is that Jonah's press of speech is not as easy to listen to as perhaps a professional reader might offer. Still, thumbs up!

From David Baldacci - the modern master of the thriller and number-one worldwide best-selling novelist - comes a new hero: a lone Army Special Agent taking on the toughest crimes facing the nation. John Puller is a combat veteran and the best military investigator in the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigative Division. His father was an Army fighting legend, and his brother is serving a life sentence for treason in a federal military prison. You can't lose with suspense, escape, and David Baldacci. In times of being overwhelmed with a big to do list. I turn to this writer for compelling story, and a way to tune down and enjoy the ride.

But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, but what she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

Well read, well crafted, with a sensitive portrayal of things that really happen. I was wary given the disturbing plot line, but I am so glad I read it. I work with people such as these. Articulate. WOW!
