According to Whyte, we humans are involved not just with one marriage with a significant other. We also have made secret vows to our work and unspoken vows to an inner, constantly developing self. Whyte's thesis is that to separate these marriages in order to balance them is to destroy the fabric of happiness itself; that in each of these marriages, will, effort, and hard work are overused, overrated, and in many ways self-defeating.

In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions. Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up".

Would you consider the audio edition of Falling Upward to be better than the print version?

No. I find myself pulling over to the side of the road often, to take notes. It's so packed with valuable stuff, it's hard just to listen and drive.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    no

    Any additional comments?

I recommend anything by Richard Rohr. I do find it easier to read, though

In Loving What Is, best-selling author Byron Katie introduced thousands of people to her simple and profound method of finding happiness through questioning the mind. Now, I Need Your Love, Is That True? examines a universal, age-old source of anxiety: our relationships with others. In this groundbreaking book, Katie helps you question everything you have been taught to do to gain love and approval. In doing this, you discover how to find genuine love and connection.

What did you love best about I Need Your Love, Is That True??

The interesting exercises that are very provokative of honest inquiry

Would you recommend I Need Your Love, Is That True? to your friends? Why or why not?

No, I would recommend, "Loving What Is"
THe down side of this audio is that the personal examples were staged, acted out. THis took away from the genuineness for me. When I listened to , "loving what is" the live interviews were what blew me away, as I could experience the genuineness and was deeply moved. Having these interviews staged, even though they were real, did take away a great deal from my ability to receive them well. Since Katie's approach is so radical, I need the live stuff to make it real for me.

What did you learn from I Need Your Love, Is That True? that you would use in your daily life?

I am already using her exercises in my daily life. I really, really like the places they take me, toward greater levels of honesty.

    Any additional comments?

Byron Katie's work is worth a second and a third look. There is gold here.

What if you could cultivate the mind of a bodhisattva -- one who has dedicated one's life to the benefit of others? According to Pema Chödrön, best-selling author and American-born Buddhist nun, you can. On Bodhisattva Mind, she examines sheshin, or "guarding alertness", and the other qualities of mind we need to develop on the path to enlightenment.
