This is classic Willis, but it steps into some different territory. It's a grand read. Enjoy!

When Axel deciphers an old parchment that describes a secret passage through a volcano to the centre of the earth, nothing will stop him and his eccentric uncle from embarking on a perilous, terrifying journey through the subterranean world.

Tad Davis says: "Great translation, excellent reading"
    "Unlistenable"

I know I loved this story as a child, and read it then. This narrator is so overdrawn I couldn't listen at all to it
    Very sad

In 1848, the British East India Company, having lost its monopoly on the tea trade, engaged Robert Fortune, a Scottish gardener, botanist, and plant hunter, to make a clandestine trip into the interior of China - territory forbidden to foreigners - to steal the closely guarded secrets of tea horticulture and manufacturing. For All the Tea in China is the remarkable account of Fortune's journeys into China - a thrilling narrative that combines history, geography, botany, natural science, and old-fashioned adventure.

I love micro histories about odd bits of the world. This one is a delight. It's full of a great deal of information about tea, British imperialism, China, India and that point in time. All in all, it's an interestingly drawn picture.
The author is not a great narrator, but she really didn't get in the way of her story. I found it a treat.

New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally riveting story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness.

Lisa says: "Wonderful Book, Very Emotional"
    "Such a cheap trick end!"
    Overall

There are interesting questions within this book, but it's almost more satire than real. Who could possibly design a child as spare parts for a child? Yuck.
But the end is one where they get exactly what they asked for. It's a prayer the devil answers. And it's as cheap a trick as I've heard of in a story. I was so let down.

In Christopher Moore's ingenious debut novel, we meet one of the most memorably mismatched pairs in the annals of literature. The good-looking one is one-hundred-year-old ex-seminarian and "roads" scholar Travis O'Hearn. The green one is Catch, a demon with a nasty habit of eating most of the people he meets.

I found the first five minutes of this so grotty I couldn't go further. I loved A Dirty Job, but this is about college boys. I don't think it would be enjoyable unless you were one.

The chartered Zarathustra Company had it all their way. Their charter was for a Class III uninhabited planet, which Zarathustra was, and it meant they owned the planet lock stock and barrel. They exploited it, developed it and reaped the huge profits from it without interference from the Colonial Government. Then Jack Holloway, a sunstone prospector, appeared on the scene with his family of Fuzzies and the passionate conviction that they were not cute animals but little people.

    Harry says: "Interesting accents"

This is a sweet story. I had read it years ago, and find it a bit dated, but still a treasure.

When a wealthy man first meets his mail-order bride in 1907, he realizes this statuesque beauty is anything but a "simple missionary's daughter." But he doesn't know of her devious plan to leave Wisconsin as a rich widow. Nor does she know of the furious demons he longs to unleash during the lonely months of snowbound isolation.

Richard says: "Intriguing story but only average writing"
    "Interesting but disturbing."
    Overall

I can't say I didn't finish this book, but it went to some very dark places.it's a redemption layered over about a half dozen betrayals. It's also a view of rural Wisconsin in the 1880s that I suspect is probably quite true.

  • Runner: A Jane Whitefield Novel

When a bomb goes off in the middle of a hospital fundraiser, Native American guide-turned-housewife Jane Whitefield finds herself face to face with the cause of the explosion: a young pregnant girl who has been tracked across the country by a team of hired hunters. That night, regardless of what she wants or the vow that she's made to her husband, Jane must come back to transform one more victim into a runner. And her quest for safety sets in motion a mission that will be a rescue operation - or a chance for revenge.

    Jackie says: "Riveting"
    "great series, great read"
    Overall

I love this series and this is Perry at his best. Jane Whitefield represents alternative thought in her native American background, and in it's own way, alternative ethics. But it's a hard edge story that I did not guess the end to (and I can almost always guess the end).

  • The Pillars of the Earth

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

    CynNC says: "Captivating"
    "miserable"
    Overall

This is a miserable book! The characters are not particularly medieval in their actions and the gratuitous sex scene after the wife's death is nasty. The book is grim in ways that are probably historic. I'm sure medieval life was hard, but this applies modern responses to it in a way that does not work. Very hard to listen to and annoying.

When Streaker - the first starship designed and crewed by dolphins - discovers a derelict ancient armada with evidence of the first sentient species ever, she sets off a war between dozens of galactic races eager to use the information for their own advancement.

    Andrew says: "Getting Better"
    "Good book well read"
    Overall

This is an old favorite book to begin with. But it's a delight read. My only issue is with the stuttering dolphins. It's written into the text but I think it could have been handled better.
