  • Untamed: Medieval Trilogy, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Lowell
    • Narrated By Anne Flosnik
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A hero of the crusades, Dominic le Sabre has returned in glory and in triumph to claim his reward: the beautiful Saxon bride awarded to him by the conqueror king. But Lady Margaret of the Blackthorne cannot yield to the bold Norman invader.

    Diana says: "Perfect!"
    "Well done."

I’ve read this book in hard copy and really liked it. I was curious to see if the listen would measure up. A lot depends on the narrator, and I have listened to Anne Flosnik before and not been impressed. I am happy to say this is one of her better reads. Her performance of the dramatic and pivotal scenes in the book was well done. I will be looking to more listens from her. Hopefully, we will be offered the 2 other books in this trilogy, Forbidden and Enchanted.

  • Bloody Jack

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By L.A. Meyer
    • Narrated By Katherine Kellgren
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Life as a ship's boy aboard HMS Dolphin is a dream come true for Jacky Faber. Gone are the days of scavenging for food and fighting for survival on the streets of 18th-century London. Instead, Jacky is becoming a skilled and respected sailor as the crew pursues pirates on the high seas. There's only one problem: Jacky is a girl. And she will have to use every bit of her spirit, wit, and courage to keep the crew from discovering her secret.

    Terry says: "Sometimes it clicks"
    "Delightfully narrated."

Katherine Kellgren makes this book. This book is good as a read, but the listen is so much more vivid and entertaining. I can't wait to get the rest of the series.

Note: I can't imagine why this books is categorized for ages 12+ . I would definitely want to shield any teenagers from the sexual harrassment and attempted rape scenes.

  • Devil's Bride: A Cynster Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Stephanie Laurens
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble

Governess Honoria Wetherby values her independence. She would rather travel the world than marry and give some man control of her life. Then, one stormy evening, fate changes all her plans. She stumbles upon a mortally wounded young man in the woods. When the stranger dies, she is trapped in a cabin with his body and with his newly arrived cousin, Devil, whom she soon learns is aptly named.

Scottie in TX says: "Finally! The Book that Started it All!"
    "An awesome listen!"

Simon Prebble will knock your socks off with his reading of this well written book. Laurens builds up and maintains the sexual tension between the hero and heroine from their very first encounter, but Prebble's performance brings it to life. You will not be disappointed.

  • Powder and Patch

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Georgette Heyer
    • Narrated By Jamie Glover
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Cleone Charteris is the joy and despair of all the young men of the countryside, and she seeks a husband - a man who can duel and dice with the best of them. One of the men after her heart is the masterful and handsome Mr. Philip Jettan. But compared to other men in 18th-century England, Philip is out of step - he is careless in his appearance and, in Cleone's own words, she cannot marry him because he is 'a raw country bumpkin'. He even refuses to buy a wig!

Carol says: "Of a certainty, c'est different"
    "Simply Delightful!!!"

Gerogette Heyer has once again written a story full of memorable and lovable characters. Both the principal and secondary characters are so well written and well performed that you can see them in your mind's eye. Jamie Glover's performance is masterful. You are never at a loss as to who is speaking, or how that person is feeling. Just expertly done! And this book is funny - the transformation of the hero from the macho, masterful country bumpkin to the elegant, languid, bored, poetry-writing English fob is just hilarious!

  • Only Mine

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Lowell
    • Narrated By Richard Ferrone

Wolfe Lonetree, the illegitimate son of an English viscount and a Cheyenne woman, has agreed to rescue his friend, Lady Jessica, from an arranged marriage to an abusive Englishman. In return, she will accompany him to America to live in the Rockies as his frontier wife. Despite the frightening passion her handsome husband arouses in her, Jessica fears a man's touch and is determined to be married in name only. But Wolf has other plans for his naive young wife.

    Amazon Customer says: "ENJOYABLE"

I like Elizabeth Lowell's writing and am sorry to give one of her books such a low grade, but I loathe heroes who are cruel to their heroines and in this one, the hero is cruel for almost the whole book. I listened to the entirety hoping (and praying) it would get better, but it didn't.

I also normally like Richard Ferrone, but the whispering voice of the heroine drove me up the wall. I couldn't wait for the story to end.

  • The Proposition

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By Judith Ivory
    • Narrated By Steven Crossley
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Lady Edwina Bollash is a woman of importance and distinction who has never been the object of any man's affection. However, when she meets Mick Tremore, a tall, handsome young man from the bottommost rung of society, she instantly attracts his attention. As Mick wants desperately to become a gentleman, Edwina decides to transform him into a man with class.

Mary says: "Very enjoyable as well as fun"
    "A very satisfying listen."

This was a joy to listen to. It is well written and well read. Judith Ivory can give lessons on how to write sexual tension. The characters are well drawn and lovable, especially the hero. This is a light, funny, engaging story concerned more with the relationship between the protagonists. There is never any doubt in your mind about where they are coming from, or why they do what they do. This was a well-spent credit.

  • The Unfinished Clue

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 12 mins)
    • By Georgette Heyer
    • Narrated By Clifford Norgate

The Unfinished Clue is a clever and humorous murder mystery set at a British country estate in the 1930s. There, each of the invited guests, along with the victim's wife and the estate's staff members (the butler, the maids, the gardener), had good reason to hate the arrogant and abrasive victim. Sir Arthur Billington-Smith had successfully alienated each and every one of them.

Karen says: "There are more Georgette Heyer mysteries!!"

Good performance coupled with a light-hearted, humorous detective story. It reminded me of the film Gosford Park directed by Robert Altman. I like Heyer's romances but was worried her talent would not translate to her mysteries. I was wrong. This was a delightfully entertaining listen.

  • Heaven's Net Is Wide: A Prequel to Tales of the Otori

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By Lian Hearn
    • Narrated By J. Paul Boehmer, Julia Fletcher
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Set before Tales of the Otori begins, Heaven's Net recounts the life of Lord Otori Shigeru, the series' spiritual warrior-godfather and the adoptive father of the Tales' Takeo. We learn about Shigeru's training; his relationship with the Tribe of mysteriously powerful assassins; his fateful meeting with Lady Maruyama, who would become his secret lover; the battle of Yaegahara, where his father is killed; and other turning points that shaped the Tales.

    Maria says: "Extremely Satisfied"
    "Extremely Satisfied"

I listened the first 3 books of the Otori 3 years ago and just loved them. I found this prequel by chance and couldn't wait to listen to it. This was a very satisfying listen. I was so pleased with the book, that I listened to the other 3 again.

Much that is wonderful in Across the Nightingale Floor (1st book) is the enigma surrounding Shigeru’s motives for finding and harboring Takeo. Shigeru is truly inscrutable and devious and charming. This second time around, a lot of the mystery surrounding Takeo seemed reasonable and ordinary, where it was originally puzzling, strange and exciting.

I would recommend listening to this prequel only after you have already finished Across the Nightingale Floor.

  • You Suck: A Love Story

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Christopher Moore
    • Narrated By Susan Bennett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Being dead sucks. Make that being undead sucks. Literally. Just ask Thomas C. Flood. Waking up after a fantastic night unlike anything he's ever experienced, he discovers that his girlfriend, Jody, the woman of his dreams, is a vampire. And surprise! Now he's one, too.

Deborah says: "Do They Give Awards For "Best Reader"?"
    "Glad I hung in there."

At first I could not get into the book and I was irritated with the reader's performance. Most of the characters in this book are young adults that I would not like my own kids to sound like. However, I am glad to say that this was not at all a waste of my time. This is the second Christopher Moore book I have listened to and his absurd but witty outlook shines. I even got to like the narrator's performance once I realized that it went well with the author's view. I especially enjoyed the Abbie Normal Chronicles. Hilarious.
