The ruling Asharites of Al-Rassan have come from the desert sands, but over centuries, seduced by the sensuous pleasures of their new land, their stern piety has eroded. The Asharite empire has splintered into decadent city-states led by warring petty kings. King Almalik of Cartada is on the ascendancy, aided always by his friend and advisor, the notorious Ammar ibn Khairan - poet, diplomat, soldier - until a summer afternoon of savage brutality changes their relationship forever.

Guy Gavriel Kay is a marvelous writer. I listen to his books and I read his books. He is a masterful storyteller. His stories go along on several different planes at the same time, no way to lose interest or become bored by a character.

From New York Times best-selling novelist Sharon Kay Penman comes the stunning story of a great medieval warrior-king, the accomplished and controversial son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine: Richard the Lionheart. A powerful tale of intrigue, war, and diplomacy, Lionheart plays out against the roiling conflicts of love and loyalty, passion and treachery, all set against the rich textures of the Holy Land.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I have loved reading Sharon Kay Penman's books. The narration by Emily Gray was distracting and took away from the story.

What did you like best about this story?

    The writing

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her voices were childish and couldn't carry the importance of the characters she was narrating.

Did Lionheart inspire you to do anything?

Yes, I will go get the book at the library and read it without the childish voices.

    Any additional comments?

I have always thought that Sharon Kay Penman wrote intelligent thoughtful historical fiction, I could hardly listen to the voice changes that were made. A straight read would have been better. The Crusaders sounded like 10 year old boys. Not good

In his latest innovative novel, the award-winning author evokes the dazzling Tang Dynasty of 8th-century China in a story of honor and power. Inspired by the glory and power of Tang dynasty China, Guy Gavriel Kay has created a masterpiece. It begins simply. Shen Tai, son of an illustrious general serving the Emperor of Kitai, has spent two years honoring the memory of his late father by burying the bones of the dead from both armies at the site of one of his father's last great battles.

I think this is one of the best books I have listened to. After finishing it the first time I immediately listened to it a second time, and know that I will listen to it again.
