In her 40s - a widow, too young, too modern to accept the role - Becky Aikman struggled to make sense of her place in an altered world. In this transcendent and infectiously wise memoir, she explores surprising new discoveries about how people experience grief and transcend loss and, following her own remarriage, forms a group with five other young widows to test these unconventional ideas. Together, these friends summon the humor, resilience, and striving spirit essential for anyone overcoming adversity.

What would have made Saturday Night Widows better?

I made it through half of the book but it was so bad I gave it up. The book dragged and never really said much. Very superficial and not something I would recommend to anyone looking for insight and meaning. I became a widow in my 40's and although not a writer, I could have written a book more interesting than this one.

What could Becky Aikman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

More indepth writing about feelings and perhaps some real revalations.

How could the performance have been better?

Voice was irratating, perhaps because I was so dissapointed in the book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Dissappointment

    Any additional comments?

    Would not recommend.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

If you could sum up The Goldfinch in three words, what would they be?

I've never written a review of a book before although I've listened to hundreds of Audible books, but after listening to The Goldfinch I feel compelled to try. The story is of a young boy who encounters tragedy in his young life that follows and shapes his existence. At times it becomes rather dark and disturbing as life can be but ultimately it is a statement of the realities of life and his acceptance of what shapes all of us. I was transfixed and to a degree transformed by this thought provoking work of art!

Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom has acquired heart trouble, a Florida condo, and a second grandchild. His son, Nelson, is behaving erratically; his daughter-in-law, Pru, is sending out mixed signals; and his wife, Janice, decides in mid-life to become a working girl. As, though the winter, spring, and summer of 1989, Reagan's debt-ridden, AIDS-plagued America yields to that of George Bush, Rabbit explores the bleak terrain of late middle age, looking for reasons to live.

What did you love best about Rabbit at Rest?

Being in the same genertion as Rabbit I found his pessimistic look at the rest of his life disturbing yet amusing. I read Rabbit Run in my early 20's I think, and I don't remeber alot of details other than I loved the book. Skipped the others written by Updike and went directly to Rabbit at Rest. Rabbits self involved, narcistic view of himself and the world is realism at its best. Reading this book has me uploading all of his Rabbit books, Can't wait!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Janice, I hope to see what she evolves into.

What does Arthur Morey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    The narration was just rigt.

In 1988, 43-year-old Jeff Winston died of a heart attack. But then he awoke, and it was 1963; Jeff was 18 all over again, his memory of the next two decades intact. This time around, Jeff would gain all the power and wealth he never had before. This time around he'd know how to do it right. Until next time.

Very thought provoking and entertaining at the same time. I stopped to think how I would do it the second time around.

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six. They were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry was thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future.
