On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me—well, actually, my true love, Darcy O’Mara, is spending a feliz navidad tramping around South America. Meanwhile, Mummy is holed up in a tiny village called Tiddleton-under-Lovey with that droll Noel Coward! And I’m snowed in at Castle Rannoch with my bumbling brother, Binky, and sourpuss sister-in-law, Fig.

What made the experience of listening to The Twelve Clues of Christmas the most enjoyable?

It's a great story and reader. I go back and forth between reading print and listening to audio versions of the Royal Spyness books. But I always enjoy the the audio versions. I liked the idea of the 12 clues of Christmas and didn't get it until the writer made the discovery, though I did get one of the murder's which is always loved that the long arch of the story was moved forward.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Besides the main character's I loved the dowager countess. She's such an old salt.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    The caroling.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh out loud several times.

    Any additional comments?

I liked this book better than the last two combined.

Advanced Energy Anatomy guides you to a new understanding of how archetypes and other unconscious forces relate to problems of health, addiction, self-esteem, and victimhood, while opening you to partnership with the divine power that makes everything in life possible. It is "so well organized and intimately expressed," says AudioFile, "that repeated listening and sharing with friends will be hard to resist."

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    Someone else giving the lecture.

Would you ever listen to anything by Caroline Myss again?

    No.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Throughout the book she told illustrative stories. She didn't use names but through her words and intonation alternatively berated people, talked about people as if they were beneath her and generally came across as mean spirited.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I liked the core of her message. I just didn't like her.

    Any additional comments?

Yeah. Decent content. Maybe I'd pick up a book by her but I will never buy an lecture by her again. She put on voices for people. Demeaning voices. She told a story about a long time "friend" who would have to recognize herself in the book who she trashed. I just don't need to take spiritual lessons from someone who is so condescending and rude.

Centuries ago Acheron saved the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge. As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn’t always been on his brother's side. They've spent more centuries going at each other's throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he's willing to trade his life and future for Acheron's.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes. The 24 hours of abuse rape and complete degradation.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have had the author stop getting off on pain and degradation.

What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Berman brings the story to life.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I would not see this book if it were made into a movie.

    Any additional comments?

This is worth it for the last eight hours if you are a fan of the series. Listening to the first 24 hours isn't enjoyable and it doesn't add anything to the story that couldn't have been accomplished in an hour. I want to know the story of Styxx. It adds to the body of work and he is a likable charecer.

But seriously. Don't put yourself through the pain of listening to the first 24 hours.

Drinn is not a safe place to be a witch. Ranira knows that better than most, for when she was just a child, the temple guards burned her parents at the stake for practicing magic. Now an indentured servant for a brutal innkeeper, she lives every day with the shame of her parents' alleged crime. There is no worse time to visit Drinn than during the Midwinter Festival, when the city gates are sealed so that no outsider can witness the temple's secret rituals. And at Ranira's inn, three guests have overstayed their welcome. Attempting to protect Ranira from her master's cruelty, the three reveal their magical powers and attract the attention of the temple guards.

What disappointed you about Daughter of Witches?

I thought it was a new book by Wrede, but it is not. I made sure to check the date of publication before buying. But it was a book I have read before. I thought it was new.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I loved the book the first time I read it. I am unhappy with the purchase because it is a book I read (with my eyes and not my ears) before.

    Story

Great story, Jim Butcher does it again, one of the best on-going characters out there today with some fantastic fully fleshed supporting characters. I love the growth, the world, just about everything about "The Dresden Files" as a whole, but for @@CK@s sake Jim, actually all authors of long running serious who take a year or two to bring out the next book. STOP WITH THE BIG CLIFF HANGERS! I know, all caps is obnoxious, but this is book 13. BOOK 13 and the second book in a row he shafted his readers like that.

He doesn't need to leave us with so many unanswered questions to get us to keep buying his books. With that many questions left unanswered it didn't really feel like a complete book anyway and just ticked me off. One more book in a row like that and I could just drop the series. I’m feeling played.

Rant over. It is worth the listen/or read.

As far as the narrator goes, I know lots of people complained about the new narrator. I wish he'd used the old one for continuity. Audiobooks can be made or broken by a good narrator - and those of us who listen to books associate the reader with the character, obviously. So having a new reader come in so late in the game is weird. Even with all that, I liked John Glover and think he did a great job. It was different; he had his own take on it, but still a solid performance.

Now, as the vampire warriors defend their race against their slayers, one male's loyalty to the Brotherhood will be tested - and his dangerous mixed blood revealed.

cmclien says: "One of my favorites so far!"
"Mediocre audio editing but I still enjoyed it"
    Overall

First of all this is not a stand alone book. But that is okay, as long as you know this is not where you start. If you think of this book as a political fantasy, urban fantasy - with a LOT of sex, it's fine. The reason I mention that it is somewhere between a political and urban fantasy is because it is much more involved and complex than a romance/erotica book. Which with all of the sex, erotica, you might mistake it for.

This is a great addition to the series and a good book, but it does not stand alone.

The audio editing is choppy in several places. It takes you out of the moment, but does not (as far as I know) edit out any important moments.

Amazon Customer says: "Interesting character, no Gabra"
"Enjoyable Listen, if a bit Tedious in Places"
    Overall

A previous reviewer already addressed the technical and reader issues with the book, so I won't re-hash that. While I enjoyed it and actually finished listening to it over two days (I've been laid off so I need something to keep my mind easily occupied while playing with my two year old.) what made this a three rather than a four star book for me was that, well it became tedious in parts, just going on and on, and on when I wanted it to get to the point. This is from someone who will only buy unabridged and greatly enjoys fantasy novels, which have a certain style that, if not edited well become, well, boring.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Gaiman’s not just an award-winning author, but a narrator who earns rave reviews – and fields requests from other authors to perform their books, too! Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead....

She is accompanied by the soldiers Justin and Tayse, two King's Riders who are unswervingly loyal to the crown. Also on the journey are the shape-changers Kirra and Donnal, and a young mystic named Cammon who can practically read minds.

It took me a few hours to get into this, and if I didn't need something to listen to while working out, I'm unsure if I would have finished it. But I am glad I did. It quickly became un-put-a-down-able and I'm looking forward to listening to the next reader. Speaking of which I like the reader.

Someone below remarked that this was a good light romance, and while there are romantic elements, it is more a fantasy (which generally has romantic elements) than a romance. I read both genres, and there is a distinction.

There are hours upon hours of degradation and pain outlined in this book. It wouldn't bother me so much but so much of it was repetitive that I stopped feeling empathy for Acheron and began feeling nothing but boredom. This is a disappointing book for fans of the series. I wish I'd skipped it.
