I can see how this might not be a book for everyone. Make sure to listen to the sample before buying. David Rakoff had a most unique voice and I loved it but it can be grating to some people. Also optimistic or sunny happy people might not love the dark negative betty loveliness that David just embraces fully and completely. He was an artist and the world is a little less bright because he is gone.
At times it was a bit slow and if you are looking for action THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU. It's basically a love story mixed with a dash of suspense. I enjoyed it.
Let me start out saying I love this series and Sandman Slim. Every single book, till this one I would give 5 stars all the way. This book wasn't "bad". The take down of the old gods just seemed way to easy and the battle between our god against the old gods just seemed way to anti climactic. I expected more of a blowout and more magical demon fighting and whatnot. But still I think Richard Kadrey is a great author.
Yes, he is a great voice actor. I sometimes will give a book a chance simply because he does the voice work.
I thought it was an okay read. But I mean it was god fighting Old gods! I expected more fire and brimstone and lightning and magical weapons and spells. I mean its gods fighting each other here. Now the ending. The storyline that goes off into makes me very excited. I hope he does follow up on that.
Definitely. Its got some heavy duty emotional stuff in there. It has a love story for someone looking for that. Its got action and adventure. Its just a fun book.
The movie they made of this book is a travesty. I will say this though, in the follow up books in the series when the focus changes to someone else's perspective. Well all I will say is I liked Davy's storyline much more. But.....I did enjoy the rest of the story and conclusions of it.
Futuristic Genetically Modified.
It clearly is just a dystopia cookie cut out, BUT the action is so well written and the coniving and backstabbing and killing. Its just wild.
Darrow of course followed probably by Severo.
Well no. I have to warn readers here that the beginning first chapters are very slow and are just about a boy who loves a girl. Once that is over and Darrow agrees to be the hand of vengeance it just gets better and better from there.
If you don't like the start, stick with it. It gets better.
Yes. It was interesting. I did find the build up to the action a bit slow, but it didn't take away much from my enjoyment.
No. The beginning several chapters sort of bored me and I had to force myself to keep going, but I was rewarded with a really well written science fiction/horror story at the end.
Definitely pick it up if you like the idea of different dimensions and government cover ups.
This caught my attention because it switched up the paradigm of hero's with super powers. I have read the follow up books and I want more information about the cause of the powers.
Its a quirky book. I liked it, but I'd like further explanation of the storyline. Not killing off the dictator super powers, but where the powers came from and why? And why is almost everyone evil who has them?
I expected a more horror/sci-fi mashup. It wasn't particularly scary at any point. It seemed more like a story about the politics between Indian nations and their struggle for their land.
I thought there would be more of a mystical line that would flow through the story. The hallucinations at the end from the herb he was chewing was pretty much all that was mystical. The bats were just big bats who carried a rabies/virus/plague thing.
It was fine I think the storyline just wasn't working for me so I didn't like his performance automatically.
I can't think of any.
This book is more of a political view of Indian affairs and hardships. I didn't find it at all horrifying or particularly interesting.
First of all I have to say comparing from book one to book three it just seems like two different authors almost. Book one was so meandering and slightly boring, but by book three the action is high intensity and way more interesting. I enjoyed the small glimpses into the alien world and description of them. I wish we had learned more about both races, but I'm very satisfied with where the story went. I see they left a bit of a hope for a fourth book there at the end. I would buy it just to hear more of the story.
I wish I could go back to my original review on book one and put a notation in saying to stick with the story because it gets better.
The least interesting aspect is definitely the high school and parents storyline which is why book one was so....I don't want to say bad, but boring maybe. As soon as the author did away with that part of the storyline the book became more interesting.
I wanted to see where the story was going with the alien tech and alien conflict that downed the ships. That is basically the only reason I went on from book one. I can say happily that the author does a much better job in creating conflict and action in this book. It still wasn't a hardcore drama, but the sci fi does ramp up a notch along with the action.
Again, this series is probably not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but its an okay sci-fi story. This book graduated several levels above the previous book so I think I will go ahead and see the conlusion to the series - or the next book at least - since I don't know if that one will end in a cliff hanger or not.
Definitely, but I know it would not appeal to everyone.
I stumbled upon this series a while back and gave it a shot. I really cannot describe how much I love the entire series. Its dark and a little dirty, but there is a great story in there also with alot of wise cracks. Kadrey really made me feel like I knew the characters. He really does an awesome job of bringing you into the world he created in this book. Props to Macleod also for doing great narration even though the french accent for one of the characters really got on my nerves, I got used to it. This series is not deadly serious, but it shows you into a vision of the occult/hell/beasts/demons/angels with such in depth description. Sandman Slim is just a beast that loves to drink and isn't afraid of a bar fight now and then......or quite alot actually. Great, fun, dark, and emotional journey. I recommend reading the entire series or buying all the audio books.
