  • Steve Jobs

Based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I read Isaacon's biography of Benjamin Franklin in print and found it sterile and too exhaustive. The soul of the man was buried in too many meaningless details for the reader to endure. He has done the same overwrought thing to Jobs. Combine that with this really awful reader and it's mess. I suggest reading the hard copy.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Interesting - Jobs didn't wear shoes or bathe a lot.
Least interesting - just about everything else. What a disappointment.

Would you be willing to try another one of Dylan Baker’s performances?

I will run screaming for the door the next time I hear the guy's voice. Maybe it was bad microphones, maybe he's going through puberty. The tonal quality of his voice is indescribably awful. He sounds like a 7th grader having a bad day. Did he get paid for this?

Could you see Steve Jobs being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No. Most people know the products but not the guy. He was very successful but a bit creepy and was only personally a cult figure within a small circle. The Facebook\Oprah\WWF culture that buys movie tickets won't be interested.
Keanu Reeves could play the part.

    Any additional comments?

I have listened to over a hundred books in the last few years and it's an accomplishment to be the worst. This is tied for worst with Zbiegnew Brzezinski reading his own book Second Chance.

  • Stress Test: Reflections on Financial Crises

On January 26, 2009, during the depth of the financial crisis and having just completed five years as President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Timothy F. Geithner was sworn in by President Barack Obama as the 75th Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. Now, in a strikingly candid, riveting, and historically illuminating memoir, Geithner takes listeners behind the scenes during the darkest moments of the crisis.

    "Excellent Content, Terrible Audio Quality"

Where does Stress Test rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

An 8 on a 1-10 scale. The last third of the book makes more sense of the financial system and what regulators were trying to do about the crisis than everything else I have read on the subject. An excellent and objective job of explaining things and debunking a lot of the myth and misinformation that surrounds the financial crisis.

What other book might you compare Stress Test to and why?

At The Center of the Storm by George Tenant. A book written by one of the insiders tasked with managing a terrible time in America.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Timothy F. Geithner?

ANYBODY. Geithner should have read the opening and closing segments but nothing more.
    Seriously, Boyd Gaines, Paul Boehmer.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I have listened to 175 Audible books according to my log. This might be the worst audio quality of the whole lot. The sound level comes and goes. Geithner's voice sounds different, like he just woke from a nap and used a different microphone, within a single brief passage. Mispronounced words that he himself wrote. He leaves out the first consonant in a lot of words so it was an effort to understand what he was saying

    Any additional comments?

I really suggest doing it over with a professional reader.
