Such a disappointing read. The story was tedious and overly long.....more than 11 hours. Probably 3 hours of actual plot and the remaining time spent musing over lost love, to-love-or-not-to-love, career vs. love, family, friendship, etc. Felt like chick lit trying to be a literary experience. Have enjoyed the author's previous books. Not sure I will attempt another one.
One of the best audio books I've come across. A beautifully written story with two amazing reading performances. The subject matter was not always an easy listen, but it was always engrossing. The events at Terezin had a realistic feel, so I was not surprised to learn that many characters in the story had actually existed. Highly recommended.
Expected much more humor; across a variety of topics
The short story format was the best attribute
Some of the subject matter was uncomfortable
There's a chance this might be a decent story, but we'll never know. The over-the-top dramatic narration reduces the story to barely tolerable. Couldn't wait for it to end. Perhaps the narrator should have read a little Myron Bolitar before he took on the Jack Fisher character. Take a pass on this.
What an enjoyable experience. A well-written book with likeable characters. The plot revolves around the search for a missing person and was well-paced and absorbing. And as good as the story is, the narrator is even better. One of the best I've heard...with an extraordinary handling of the Danish accents. Hope there are more Department Q books to follow.
This was my first book by Joshilyn Jackson....what a great experience. I found the story and characters compelling. I was hooked immediately. The author does an outstanding job of reading and interpreting her own book. But I was even more taken with the quality of Ms. Jackson's writing. The story is related in turns by three different characters and each was distinctive and authentic. Ms. Jackson has a real gift for the 'turn of a phrase' and never had a single throwaway sentence in hours of listening. I will be looking for other books by this author.
I found this to be a really fun, light read. It had a great sense of humor. Am surprised at the negative comments on the narration. I thought the narrator perfectly complemented the story. It's a great book to bring with you on your daily walk.
Great ride. Enjoyed the flash forward and flash back techniques. Narrator was one of the best; captured the characters really well. As usual, includes suspense and wit.
Love the Andy Carpenter series with its wit and intelligence and likeable characters. Can't quite believe this is the same author. The story lacks heart and depth and the writing is unadorned. Another serial killer plotline with a revolting bad guy doing random, revolting killing. What's to enjoy?
