Gail Carriger created a fascinating steampunk vision of Victorian England in her “intoxicatingly witty” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) debut novel Soulless—the first in the best-selling Parasol Protectorate series. Changeless is the second in the series and finds Alexia Tarabotti, now the Lady Woolsey, quite put out after her werewolf husband goes missing. So, armed with her trusty parasol, Alexia boards a dirigible and heads for Scotland to find him.

It's a great achievement to create a sequel that outshines the first installment. Ms. Carriger achieved this momentous feat in comical, endearing, and at times, heartbreaking perfection. The narrator and this story melt together like cheese and toast. Loved it, can't say enough good things.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Highly recommended, and in fact already have recommended it. This story didn't shy away from intelligent, three-dimensional characters who act sometimes irrationally and don't get held up in romance formata and shelf fodder.

Which character – as performed by John Morgan – was your favorite?

Mr. Morgan's voicing of Gabriel was spot on.

    Any additional comments?

I had only one complaint on this recording: I feel that occasionally Mr. Morgan read aloud directive notes that were in the script only to inform his performance. Listening to a romance read by a deep-voiced man gave me pause, but the performance was very engaging in whole.

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate number of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance from the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand. Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid.

It was painful to read this, because the artistry of the telling of this relationship was so real, so intense, and so personally familiar. How many times did I want to shake Abby in to reality, show her all the stupid stuff she was doing, but heard the echoes of my own justifications in her thoughts and actions?

*Audiobook*: Excellent reader. Emma Galvin is becoming a personal favorite. There were moments where I felt she was making Travis sound a bit too Jersey Shore, but I acclimated to it.

Liz and Sarabeth were childhood neighbors, brought as close as sisters by the suicide of Sarabeth's mother when the girls were just 16. In the decades that followed - through Liz's marriage and Sarabeth's attempts to make a happy life for herself - their relationship remained a source of continuity and strength. But when Liz's adolescent daughter enters dangerous waters that threaten to engulf the family, the fault lines in the women's friendship are revealed.

Technically solid writing is the best I can say. Horrible in every other way. The reader ends the book still waiting for the semblance of a story to really emerge. Reader pulls off an okay performance, given the lack of exciting/interesting material she was given.

One of the best "reads" I've had in a while. Definitely amongst the best audio adaptations I've purchased. Moving, tender, comical, brutally honest, and brave writing. That's right... BRAVE. There needs be more works like this on the market. Plus, it was almost like this book was meant to be audio. It transitions perfectly to that medium. Had me laughing until it hurt, and hurting until I laughed. READ THIS. Or better yet.... LISTEN TO THIS N*O*W
