Nero Wolfe is "a gourmet who never walks when he can sit and never sits when he can lie down." Join Rex Stout's reclusive, overweight, orchid-loving super sleuth as masterfully portrayed by Sydney Greenstreet in this exciting radio series. Ever in search of a perfect meal and a cold bottle of beer, Wolfe often sends Archie Goodwin, his secretary and operative, in his stead. Archie, while trying to keep his well-known weakness for red heads in check, follows up on leads and does the leg work, setting up his brilliant boss to solve the case.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you are a member of the radio generation, this series represents the VERY BEST of that generation. I read all of the Nero Wolfe series, and as a child I listened to Sydney Greenstreet. Once again, I was transported through that aesthetic distance to the never-never land of the imagination.
If you are not a member of the radio generation, try it. You might be shocked. You may find Greenstreet's renderings strange and/or wonderful. Who knows?

One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Best Actress nominee Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming The Dark Knight Rises, lent her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to be better than the print version?

So seldom does one come across such an experience. This audio version is equal to or greater than the written word. Many books of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries were written to be read aloud (think Dickens, here). Oz is a late version of this. This is how many families used to spend their evenings…working on crafts (handwork) and reading to each other. Too bad James Joyce and Marcel Proust spoiled that (IMHO). So whether you are 70 (as I am) or 7, it makes no difference. This is literature.
Here's a thought…if your grandchildren do not like your voice when you read to them, turn this on and sit there and hold their hands. Watch them smile and drift off to Oz dreamland.

What about Anne Hathaway’s performance did you like?

This award-winning actress is partially responsible for the rebirth of classic social satire/farce/drawing-room comedies. She reads all the roles, not adequately, but superbly! Some of her characterizations I would not have thought of in a million years, and thereby creates a newness to this classic that was needed, unexpected, and so refreshing. Just like you, I love the 1939 movie. But the highest compliment I can pay Hathaway is…not once during her reading did I think of or compare her interpretation to the movie. I was shocked at how good a vocal actress she is. (No pretty face or gorgeous costumes here.)
