I suppose it might be better in paper form, where you can skip around to find whatever nuggets of information are useful to you. But as an audio book it's just pointless.

Author of the best-seller FDR, Jean Edward Smith is a master of the presidential biography. Setting his sights on Dwight D. Eisenhower, Smith delivers a rich account of Eisenhower’s life using previously untapped primary sources. From the military service in WWII that launched his career to the shrewd political decisions that kept America out of wars with the Soviet Union and China, Smith reveals a man who never faltered in his dedication to serving America, whether in times of war or peace.

Where does Eisenhower in War and Peace rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    somewhere in the middle.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jean Edward Smith? Why or why not?

yes. I thought it was well written, and had a fairly good pace.

Have you listened to any of Paul Hecht’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    no

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

He was smarter than you thought.

    Any additional comments?

The only serious criticism I have is that the author keeps saying that Ike was smart, or did things in a skillful manner, but rarely explains what those things were or how Ike did it. We are told that Ike worked really hard, sometimes driving himself to exhaustion. Just what was he doing in all those long hours?

Stephen R. Platt is widely respected for his incisive nonfiction, particularly in regard to his knowledge and understanding of China. With Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom, Platt details the absorbing narrative of the Taiping Rebellion, which resulted in the loss of 20 million lives. Occurring in the 1850s, this is the story of a cultural movement characterized by intriguing personages such as influential military strategist Zeng Guofan and brilliant Taiping leader Hong Rengan.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The book was fascinating. An interesting description of a little known (in the west) period of chinese history.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Angela Lin?

Almost anyone, I think. Ms. Lin puts a heavy, portentous emphasis on almost every other word. It's intolerable, and it makes the book pretty much unlistenable. The READING DESTROYS all PLEASURE in the BOOK. You get the point.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Yes.

You're driving on a deserted road when your car dies. Your cell phone isn't getting service. All you have on hand are a gum wrapper and a wire hanger. Or maybe you're living in a building without central air conditioning in July. You can't afford an AC; all you have access to are a fan and a bucket of water. In such times of desperation, many have called upon the symbol of all that is inventive, the hero who awed thousands with his cool, quick wit: "What would MacGyver do?" they ask.

    A User says: "Horrible!"
    "A sham in every way"
    Overall

The book is a bunch of "real world" stories. Some show moderately innovative thinking. In others the solutions are so mundane it's hard to believe anyone thought they were worth writing about. In any case, none of them involve the quick thinking, innovative, found- objects approach that characterized the TV character. Macgyver wouldn't do any of these things. Don't waste your time on this one.
