A colorful cast of characters begin to take the drug, which if not taken properly will have hazardous consequences. Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

*worst writing style ive ever come across
heres an example of one of his sentences:

He knows that when he gets to the place on CSV-5 where the bottom corner of the billboard is obscured by the pseudo-Gothic stained-glass arches of the local Reverend Wayne's Pearly Gates franchise, it's time for him to get over into the right lanes where the retards and the bimbo boxes poke along, random, indecisive, looking at each passing franchise's driveway like they don't know if it's a threat or a promise"

^^this is what you'll be listening to

*people say this book is funny, (didnt laugh once)

im 4 hours into this book and i have to say its the worst audio ive ever listened to.

The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

the mystery kept me interested even with the shallow characters

however this book had a horrible concept and the ending was terrible, especially the second hlaf

would not recommending, its like reading a mystery plot then discovering the killer was just a drunk guy who had to many beers that night.

After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn’t all that bad - because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard. He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long.

    way better then ghost story

    had some nice twists

good to see harry progressing as a character and in magic

however it will be hard to keep the books interesting if he tones the scale down and just makes another mystery in his town with some side villian

now that we've gotten the full scale of major characters, how will he keep the next 7 books from not going backwards to boring sideplots?

    Story

Based on the reviews I expected a masterpiece.

What I got was an average story with a interesting plot. Buy this if you want to pass the time.

However the story moves at a good pace and there was hardly a dull moment.

But all these "best book i've ever read" and "epic story" you have to wonder how low these other readers standards are.

Some things to keep in mind about the Main Character

Caine being described as a complete badass is very overrated, all his actions scenes were terrible. He was honestly not that impressive. So if you read the description and are hoping for him to kick some ass you will be disappointed. He rarely had any action scenes. And the ones he was in he just got beat up and outclassed.

He's also described as being a jerk and heartless killer, in a way he was but at the same time he just a nice guy who was trying to save his wife.

^^these were just minor gimps is his character that really bothered me when reading this book, i was expecting him to be a lot cooler.

First couple hours it was difficult to pay attention. A lot of boring details are put into the book which makes it drag in places.

Emotion felt forced and I found myself not caring.

Story was also uneventful but gives you just enough to stay somewhat interested.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

and man does this mystery thriller deliver, some of the stuff that happens i mean wow just wow

ill just leave it at that. buy it. its worth one credit.

This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Not sure why so many high ratings for this book??

After just coming off listening to the "Way of Kings" by Brandon Sanderson I thought i'd give this a go.

It was amazing I didnt just stop listening to this completely. The first 4 hours of this book have to be the most boring listen I've ever experienced. You listen to the daily things like a guy reconnecting with his mother and a college student talking about her pregnancy with her parents. It was such a drag.

I didnt connect with any of the characters. Plot is slow moving but it does pick a bit from the horrible 4 hour beginning.

Anyway as I was listening to this I kept thinking how Way of Kings was a superior book in every way. Everything "The Stand" does Way of Kings does better, better plot, better characters, never a dull moment.

The Stand is an average book at best as its a good listen if you're very bored and need to pass the time.
