  • I, Robot

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By Isaac Asimov
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

They mustn't harm a human being, they must obey human orders, and they must protect their own existence...but only so long as that doesn't violate rules one and two. With these Three Laws of Robotics, humanity embarked on a bold new era of evolution that would open up enormous possibilities, and unforeseen risks.

Herb says: "Forget the violence - Read this one for the humor"

As an audio book, it fares pretty good. Not like the movie though.

  • A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (33 hrs and 50 mins)
    • By George R. R. Martin
    • Narrated By Roy Dotrice
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

Would you listen to A Game of Thrones again? Why?

It's worth listening to again. Great narration, and superb fiction. It's much better than the tv adaptation, although that is good too.

What about Roy Dotrice’s performance did you like?

There is a ton of characters in the book, and the narrator gives a unique pitch to each of them. I enjoyed listening to all the distinctive characters. So yeah, the narrator really made this a great listen.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, but I don't want to spoil you with spoilers! There are moments when you go

    Any additional comments?

I bought this when it was on sale for 1 credit. I'm waiting for the 2nd book to go to 1 credit before I get another one. So please hurry up already, lol!

  • Fahrenheit 451

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Ray Bradbury
    • Narrated By Christopher Hurt
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The system was simple. Everyone understood it. Books were for burning, along with the houses in which they were hidden. Guy Montag was a fireman whose job it was to start fires, and he enjoyed his job. He had been a fireman for 10 years, and never questioned the pleasure of the midnight runs, nor the joy of watching pages consumed by flames. He never questioned anything, until he met a 17-year-old girl who told him of a past when people were not afraid, and a professor who told him of a future in which people could think. Guy Montag suddenly realized what he had to do.

    Casey says: "Still Relevant"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, because it's a good story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fahrenheit 451?

When the main character reveals all the books that he has been hiding.

Have you listened to any of Christopher Hurt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but the narration was a good job.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    More or less.

  • I Am Legend

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Richard Matheson
    • Narrated By Robertson Dean
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In I Am Legend, a plague has decimated the world, and those unfortunate enough to survive are transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Robert Neville is the last living man on earth. Everyone else has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood. By day, he stalks the sleeping undead, by night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn.

    "Not the movie version..."

This book and the movie are basically 2 different stories that revolve around one theme. A new virus that infects people. Other than that it's not even the same story. The audio book is based on the original novel and the movie is a big Will Smith picture. I have listened to one version in the car, and saw the other at the cinema. Both are very good.

  • Woken Furies

    • UNABRIDGED (22 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Richard K. Morgan
    • Narrated By William Dufris
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Richard K. Morgan has received widespread praise for his astounding 25th-century novels featuring Takeshi Kovacs, and has established a growing legion of fans. Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan's World forever.

Amazon Customer says: "Is this a joke?"
    "Was this worth it?"

I purchased the triple pack audio books, Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, and Woken Furies. Having already read Altered Carbon, I knew it would be good. Todd McLaren did great job narrating the first two books, and then... for some reason they used a different narrator for the Woken Furies. Since I've just listened to Altered Carbon, and Broken Angels, the change was very distracting and made the story hard to follow. I do recommend buying the book in paper back if you're a fan of this series...

  • The Historian

    • ABRIDGED (11 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Kostova
    • Narrated By Joanne Whalley, Martin Jarvis, Dennis Boutsikaris, and others

Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor", and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of: a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history.

John S. Atherton says: "I give the book a five but I won't buy it..."
    "The coolest Dracula yet"

This story has it all: love, life, death, danger, rebirth, scary on the edge of your seat moments... I wish for part 2!!!
