"Cool !"
This is one of the coolest books I have ever read / listened to and my introduction to Cyberpunk.
Also a perfect choice of narrator. I could not stop listening and was completely delighted with his performance.
If you are interested in computers and technology and languages....this is the book for you !
"Narrator kills that book"
I love all of C.J. Cherryh's Union/Alliance books (except maybe Cyteen) and was totally thrilled to finally see Downbelow Station as audiobook available here. Didn't even bother to listen to the sample - just clicked and downloaded it.
But what a disappointment !
This narrator manages to turn a great book into a dull, boring monologue that drags along. He is totally unable to convey the thrill of a situation, manages to make any description sound tedious.
The various voices he attempts are so wide off the mark that he makes those characters ridiculous. Just listen to how he butchers Mallory and Graff ! Mallory and Graff, two of the toughest characters in the series with whiny, high-pitched voices ? Hello ?
All I can say is that this narrator does not deserve even 1 star and that I will avoid him like poison from now on.
C.J.Cherryh's Union/Alliance universe is one of the most interesting, most probable and believable universes in SF. All of the Company War books are exciting, intelligent and most satisfying to read.
By using a decent narrator !
I LOVE this book and am very, very sorry to see it killed by that narrator.
This is an Audible Frontiers book, isn't it ? So if you produce any more of C.J.Cherryh's books, PLEASE PLEASE use good narrators ! Her books certainly deserve the best !
"Too much gruesome, sickening cruelty"
i think an author of Nora Roberts calibre should be able to create suspense and even horror without the gruesome details of tortured cats, calfs, steers - and people. The story starts interestingly enough and could have been a really good one without all that psychotic brutality described in loving detail.
I wonder what kind of person writes such a book, such sickening detail of torture. I don't think I would want to meet her.
She's probably a good narrator but should maybe confine herself to books with fewer people. She had to resort to irritatingly screechy voices for some of the characters.
Cut out completely ? None. it's a good plot with a surprising twist.
Disturbing. Certainly not for the faint of heart and it surprised me to find that I seem to be one of them.
"Much better than part I"
It's a great story and now that the narrator seems to have woken up a bit, he actually did a decent job.
This story is full of fascinating characters. Of course Jake and Faye stand out but I have grown very fond of all the others in the little group of Grimnoir knights as well.
Pinchot's soft, dreamy voice is just not right for this action packed story. He does the various characters and their accents very well indeed but when someone is shouting or screaming you would never know it if he didn't say so in explanation. Very good timing with the funny parts. He's doubtless a very gifted narrator. This is just not the right kind of book for him.
Absolutely. And I'm going to buy the paperback as well.
Great good fun and I'm eagerly waiting for the next book in the series.
"If only it was a different narrator...."
Good story but the narrator tried valiantly to put me to sleep. He should confine himself to reading bedtime stories. It speaks for the quality of the story that I did stay awake after all.
Great characters all of them. Intriguing chairman too.
This story deserves a better narrator. He does the various characters well. I just wish he would not sound so sleepy most of the time.
I bought Part II as well....
Not quite as good as the Monster Hunter series but I'm seriously thinking about buying the paperback so I can really enjoy the story.
"Wow !"
Awesome action thriller !
This is a complex but absolutely logical and clever story with fascinating characters. Fast-paced action, funny at times, Surprising twists. Never a boring moment. The most surprising thing about this story was that it really made me wonder if I might not, after all, want to become an online gamer :-)
Perfect performance by the narrator.
I am glad that I had a few days off when listening to this book because I could not put it down. Never have passed 38 hours faster. Excellent book, highly recommended !
"Excellent !"
I don't often give 5 stars but didn't have to think twice about giving them to this book. One of the best SF books I ever read (and I have read many)
Couldn't put it down and was sorry when it was over already.
Excellent narrator too, although it took some getting used to in the beginning.
Highly recommended !
"Wow"
this is a great series with a worthy end - wonderful. Great narrators too. Highly recommended
"Great book until just before the end"
Until Chapter 31 I thought that this was a 4 or possibly even a 5 star book - but then it went all to pieces with a stupid and extremely disappointing ending.
I loved the science and the storyline. The narrator is excellent (even though the pronunciation of the French and German names and short sentences is poor). But even the best narrator cannot make up for the stupid conclusion of a book. Now I wish that I had stopped with the end of chapter 30 and relied on my own imagination for the final chapters.
"Disappointing"
The author is obviously fresh out of ideas. Disappointing, I think I'm done with this series.
"to be continued !!"
If you are anything like me and hate to wait an indefinite amount of time for a sequel just to find out how the story ends, avoid this book !!
It's a great story but I would never have bought it, if there had been so much as a hint, that the book ends somewhere in the middle of it.
Even if / when the sequel is published, I will refuse to buy it until I am absolutely sure that it concludes the story.
So I cannot rate this with more than 3 stars, although the story itself certainly deserves at least 4.
Great disappointment !
