This is one of the coolest books I have ever read / listened to and my introduction to Cyberpunk.
Also a perfect choice of narrator. I could not stop listening and was completely delighted with his performance.
If you are interested in computers and technology and languages....this is the book for you !
Actually cool fantasy
Oberon of course :-) but Atticus is pretty cool too.
I did. Actually I'm into book 4 by now and I hate to stop listening even for sleep.
If this is Urban Fantasy, then this genre now has a new fan.
I already recommended it to my friends and colleagues.
This is the best book I read/listened to all year. I don't often rate books with 5 stars and once in a while I'm glad I have the means to distinguish the good reads from a perfect one by handing out 5 stars.
I think we can all imagine how terrifying it must be to be stranded on Mars. And to witness how this man copes and fights for his survival with ingenuity and courage is absolutely fascinating.
I wish someone had warned me not to begin this book on a Sunday afternoon when there was not enough time to finish it all in one go because I really, really hated having to stop listening 2 hours past my usual bedtime, when reason told me to catch some sleep before going to work Monday morning. I just finished it and am thinking about starting again from the beginning.
No I haven't and at first I thought it was a terrible narration. But as I got caught up in the story, his narration either got better and better or I got used to it. Now I have to say that he did an excellent job and I'll have a look at what other books he narrated.
The end of course.
More of the same, please :-)
For once the enemy is not evil. Just bad politics (and politicians). The main characters are likeable and interesting, Wilson Cole's actions are always unexpected and clever. And, last but not least, Jonathan Davis' narration is perfect.
I wonder IF this is the end of the series.... one can imagine many more adventures to come.
The story is ridiculous. No military outfit would let a man get away with all this. Totally unbelievable and annoying. The entire storyline would have to be changed to make this as good as the first 2 books in the series.
of course not
Mark Boyett is an excellent narrator. Reminds me of Oliver Wyman (which is a good thing). My favorite characters were the Tribune and Natasha.
The series started out so well with Steel World and the sequel Dust World. This one was a huge disappointment. I started to dislike the main character intensely and I don't think I would have finished the book without the great narration of Mark Boyett. If there is a sequel, I'm not sure I'm going to give it a try.
Top 50 over all, Top 10 non-fiction
Neil deGrasse Tyson's Death by Black Hole. Interesting subject, excellent presentation
First Lecture, when I realized this was going to be good
Delight, when I realized this was going to be good
I have bought 3 more books from the Great Courses Series so far
A good narration might have rescued the book.
I haven't. I saw the TV show and thought the book would probably be better. I was wrong.
The narrator sounded bored and annoyed having to read this book. That didn't help.
It's hard to like a book when the main character is so unlikeable. I saw that the other books in that series have other narrators. I might give it a try to see if that helps because over all I like the idea of the books.
I love all of C.J. Cherryh's Union/Alliance books (except maybe Cyteen) and was totally thrilled to finally see Downbelow Station as audiobook available here. Didn't even bother to listen to the sample - just clicked and downloaded it.
But what a disappointment !
This narrator manages to turn a great book into a dull, boring monologue that drags along. He is totally unable to convey the thrill of a situation, manages to make any description sound tedious.
The various voices he attempts are so wide off the mark that he makes those characters ridiculous. Just listen to how he butchers Mallory and Graff ! Mallory and Graff, two of the toughest characters in the series with whiny, high-pitched voices ? Hello ?
All I can say is that this narrator does not deserve even 1 star and that I will avoid him like poison from now on.
C.J.Cherryh's Union/Alliance universe is one of the most interesting, most probable and believable universes in SF. All of the Company War books are exciting, intelligent and most satisfying to read.
By using a decent narrator !
I LOVE this book and am very, very sorry to see it killed by that narrator.
This is an Audible Frontiers book, isn't it ? So if you produce any more of C.J.Cherryh's books, PLEASE PLEASE use good narrators ! Her books certainly deserve the best !
i think an author of Nora Roberts calibre should be able to create suspense and even horror without the gruesome details of tortured cats, calfs, steers - and people. The story starts interestingly enough and could have been a really good one without all that psychotic brutality described in loving detail.
I wonder what kind of person writes such a book, such sickening detail of torture. I don't think I would want to meet her.
She's probably a good narrator but should maybe confine herself to books with fewer people. She had to resort to irritatingly screechy voices for some of the characters.
Cut out completely ? None. it's a good plot with a surprising twist.
Disturbing. Certainly not for the faint of heart and it surprised me to find that I seem to be one of them.
It's a great story and now that the narrator seems to have woken up a bit, he actually did a decent job.
This story is full of fascinating characters. Of course Jake and Faye stand out but I have grown very fond of all the others in the little group of Grimnoir knights as well.
Pinchot's soft, dreamy voice is just not right for this action packed story. He does the various characters and their accents very well indeed but when someone is shouting or screaming you would never know it if he didn't say so in explanation. Very good timing with the funny parts. He's doubtless a very gifted narrator. This is just not the right kind of book for him.
Absolutely. And I'm going to buy the paperback as well.
Great good fun and I'm eagerly waiting for the next book in the series.
Good story but the narrator tried valiantly to put me to sleep. He should confine himself to reading bedtime stories. It speaks for the quality of the story that I did stay awake after all.
Great characters all of them. Intriguing chairman too.
This story deserves a better narrator. He does the various characters well. I just wish he would not sound so sleepy most of the time.
I bought Part II as well....
Not quite as good as the Monster Hunter series but I'm seriously thinking about buying the paperback so I can really enjoy the story.
