  • The Beautiful Mystery: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Louise Penny
    • Narrated By Ralph Cosham
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as “the beautiful mystery.”

Sparkly says: "Engaging, entertaining, and heartbreaking."
    "Couldn't "put it down"!"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Beautiful Mystery to be better than the print version?

Never read a Louise Penny---got this recommendation, and now I am ordering more of Inspector Gamache.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Character description and insight is incredibly drawn.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Scenes described beautifully---I was IN the abbey! The atmosphere and interactions were deeply affecting... I am slightly familiar with religious chants, and I could almost hear them.

    Any additional comments?

Looking forward to more from Louise Penney.

    • By Tom Franklin
    • Narrated By Kevin Kenerly
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Larry Ott and Silas “32” Jones were unlikely boyhood friends. Larry was the child of lower middle-class white parents, Silas the son of a poor, single, black mother - their worlds as different as night and day. Yet a special bond developed between them in Chabot, Mississippi. But within a few years, tragedy struck. In high school, a girl who lived up the road from Larry had gone to the drive-in movie with him and nobody had seen her again.

Ann says: "Excellent story, terrific narrator."
    "Murder mystery with many twists"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Book was good, Narrator's southern accent not quite perfect, but good. and he did several voice changes well.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    I liked it

  • Broken Harbor: Dublin Murder Squad, Book 4

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Tana French
    • Narrated By Stephen Hogan

In Broken Harbor, all but one member of the Spain family lies dead, and it’s up to Mick “Scorcher” Kennedy to find out why. Mick must piece together why their house is full of cameras pointed at holes in the walls and how a nighttime intruder bypassed all the locks. Meanwhile, the town of Broken Harbor holds something else for Mick: disturbing memories of a childhood summer gone terribly wrong.

Amazon Customer says: "Best in the Series"
"Absolutely gripped me! Heard all of them"
What did you love best about Broken Harbor?

Story, characters, description of settings, and narrator has great Irish brogue!

What about Stephen Hogan’s performance did you like?

His Irish brogue and rough-edged voiced----perfect for a "detective".

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

His affection for his disturbed sister, and his understanding of humanity.

    Any additional comments?

Really GREAT listen! I kept listening when I got home from my walks.

  • In the Company of Others

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 20 mins)
    • By Jan Karon
    • Narrated By Erik Singer

Father Tim and Cynthia arrive in the west of Ireland, intent on researching his Kavanagh ancestry from the comfort of a charming fishing lodge. The charm, however, is broken entirely when Cynthia startles a burglar and sprains her already injured ankle. Then a cherished and valuable painting is stolen from the lodge owners, and Cynthia's pain pales in comparison to the wound at the center of this bitterly estranged Irish family.

Peggy says: "wonderful, enjoyable, heart warming- a must!"
    "Father Tim's adventures in Ireland"

Really enjoyed listening to the reader with Irish accent and expressions. Father Tim is a pleasant, devout man, and he really gets involved with the people in the inn.

    "Good Binchy"

Really good story of an Irish town and its people. Loved the brogue and language. Fan of Maeve Binchy!
