"This book rises above the rest!"
This book was amazing. Not only does it poignantly tell the story of a rich, spoiled girl losing everything and having to come to terms with a new life in a strange land, but you get such an eye-opening look at the lives of the people who came to work in the fields of Southern California and the surrounding areas during the early 1900s (dust bowl and Depression years). The characters are realistically portrayed and the time period is brought to life in this story. I was touched by this tale--Esperanza is an inspiration that we can all "rise above" whatever life brings us.
"Loved this story!"
This is a great story! I was touched by Bud's steely determination and drive to find his true father. The book is well-written and will have you laughing, hoping, and crying. The way everything works out makes this a must-listen.
"Desperate for a good book?"
I read the text version of this book, and although it was sometimes a hard read (long descriptions), it turned out very well. At its heart is a lovely tale of how each our lives touches so many others, and we often find our heroes in the unlikeliest of characters. The audio version lends a certain charm to the story and its characters. I would recommend this tale to both children and adults.
"Clever and thought-provoking"
Great story, with lots of moral dilemmas that provoke discussion. Enjoyed the stories and hearing about what life was like in Utah in the early 1900s. Would definitely recommend for children of "all" ages, especially those with elementary school aged youngsters!
