Best-selling novelist Bernard Cornwell crafts a thrilling tale from his immensely popular Richard Sharpe series. In 1809 Lieutenant Sharpe and his riflemen are in Portugal, preparing for Napoleon’s next strike. The smaller English force will probably pull out before it’s too late, but not Sharpe. His orders are to find the missing daughter of an English wine shipper. Just as Sharpe and his men begin their mission, the French launch their punishing assault.

KEITH says: "Hard to go back"
"Fine story told by my favorite narrator."

Cornwell's novels seldom disappoint. Patrick Tull is a treasure. If you have not heard his reading of the Aubrey–Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian, you are in for a treat.

In the wake of a humbling incident aboard a canal boat in the Cotswolds, young Captain Horatio Hornblower arrives in London to take command of the Atropos, a 22-gun sloop barely large enough to require a captain. Her first assignment under Hornblower's command is as flagship for the funeral procession of Lord Nelson. Soon Atropos is part of the Mediterranean Fleet's harassment of Napoleon, recovering treasure that lies deep in Turkish waters

John says: "Great book. Poor narrator."
"Dreadful narration. Had to stop listening."

I chose this version because I wanted the unabridged version. Even though the sample revealed a narrator whose style seemed unsuitable, I went ahead and bought it, hoping I would get used to him.

    Big mistake.

The narration is languid and supercilious, more suited perhaps to a children's fable or a drawing room romance than a tale of adventure at sea. As the book begins, Hornblower and his wife are made to sound like a pair of lifeless, whining old fuddy-duddies. What happens after that, I couldn't say: I couldn't bear to listen to the whole first chapter.

    - sigh -

It's back to the printed word for this one. I hope Mr. Coster was not given the opportunity to drown any more Hornblower titles with his dreary narration.

There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

    Catherine says: "Powerful and Disturbing"
    "Splendid, addictive story."

This was my first audible.com book and I loved it. Mr. Lee's beautiful, deep voice is perfect for this vast story of pride, treachery and tragedy.
