A week ago, 17-year-old Lela Santos’ best friend, Nadia, killed herself. Today, thanks to a farewell ritual gone awry, Lela is standing in paradise, looking upon a vast gated city in the distance - hell. No one willingly walks through the Suicide Gates, into a place smothered in darkness and infested with depraved creatures. But Lela isn’t just anyone - she’s determined to save her best friend’s soul, even if it means sacrificing her eternal afterlife. As Lela struggles to find Nadia, she’s captured by the Guards, enormous, not-quite-human creatures that patrol the dark city’s endless streets.

started slow. a struggle to listen to in the early chapter. about half way through it gets better. the narrator's accents are kind of bad and all sound the same. the leading male role is supposed to have a sexy Slavic accent. it wasn't sexy at all and sounded like a bridge between Chinese and Spanish mix. weird. I am going to give book 2 a try.

    Story

First of all I love Thea Harrison. I enjoy her books because they are true paranormal romances and not just a lame excuse to write soft porn. This book does not disappoint. I love the characters. It is a fresh take on the elder races. It brings to the forefront characters that were just in the background. I felt this book also delve more into the overall functioning of the imaginary world she has created. She really took time to develop the lead characters so that their romance made sense. There was much more story in this book than sex. For those that love them, don't worry there are plenty of steamy scenes. I love the entire series of these books, and this one adds beautifully to the crazy world of the elder races. Give it a try. The narrator as always is excellent. I love her voices. She brings the characters to life and is never corny!

This book has been a long time coming. Earlier books in the series have built up to this moment. I found the book to be very good. I enjoyed the incredible storyline. I love how nalini includes the characters from previous books. I can invision the psy-changeling world in my mind. The book is a little slow to build, but worth the wait. Even though I realize this is fiction, some of the powers seemed a little too over the top for me. Even in fiction, one likes to imagine that certain things could *possibly* happen. This book is important to the series as a whole. It is worth the credit.

I hate when books are filled with sex scene after sex scene with no real literary substance. This book is excellent and I can't wait until book 5. Please let there be a book 5!
