Shaken by a scrape with death, big-city detective Joe Cashin is posted away from the homicide squad to the quiet town on the South Australian coast where he grew up. Carrying physical scars and not a little guilt, he spends his time playing the country cop, walking his dogs and thinking about how it all was before. But when a prominent local is attacked and left for dead in his own home, Cashin is thrust into what becomes a murder investigation.

Superb. Beautifully written noir detective yarn set in Australia that is wonderfully read. Hearing it in the colorful accent of an Australian enhances the book and adds to the local feeling. The writing is wonderful, with a lot of snide, dark humor. I've gone on to read two other books of Temple's and enjoyed them both.

An illegal immigrant is killed in a hit-and-run on a frozen mountain road in the town of Fairview, Colorado. No one is prosecuted for his death and his case is quietly forgotten. Six months later another illegal makes a treacherous run across the border, barely escaping with her life. She finds work as a maid and, secretly, begins to investigate the death of her father. But she isn't a maid, and she's not Mexican.

Excellent story. Terrific local color including Havana, Mexico, and Colorado. The narration by a native Spanish speaker added much to the story.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

The worst criticism I can make is that the good guys and gals are a little too perfect, and the bad guys and gals are a little too unwaveringly evil, but other than that it's just a terrific story. Not literature, just great entertainment. I'm definately buying Follett's sequel.

The next president, whether Democrat or Republican, will face the daunting task of repairing America's core relationships and tarnished credibility after the damage caused during the past seven years. In Memo to the President Elect, former secretary of state and best-selling author Madeleine Albright offers provocative ideas about how to confront the striking array of challenges that the next commander-in-chief will face.

The first half of this book is like a Political Science 101 lecture, if that. The advice being given is often embarrassingly simple--"a president must find time to exercise every day." The second half of the book is more what I was expecting, with overviews of our relations with most of the world's important nations. But by the time she got around to it, I was already pretty disgusted.

Stranger in a Strange Land tells the story of Valentine Michael Smith, an earthling born and educated on Mars, who arrives on Earth with superhuman powers and a total ignorance of the mores of man. Smith is destined to become a freak, a media commodity, a scam artist, a searcher, and finally, a messiah.

It may be a classic, but it reads like a low-grade comic book.
