I had discovered this book as a recommendation for a Robyn Carr alternative, but the narrator sounded like she was recording a sex show rather than reading a chick lit book. Her voice the entire time, regardless of character was just whispery, husky, and overly sensual for no apparent reason. It was distracting.
The storyline was marginal, and there was too much chit chat, and overly "drawn" characters.
Disappointing listen. I found myself drifting off several times and losing focus.
I truly enjoyed this historical romance! Only Courtney Milan could make the inheritance of traits interesting! The characters, favorites since the first in the series are colorful, endearing and thetheir relationships and stories are believable and at times painful. The journey is a scientific delight, the ending worth the struggles and wait. The parts about Rakus Erectus and associated scientific names cracked me up! But the author's note at the end had me bursting into tears...the historic representation of the Violets of the world and untold stories touched me. This book took extraordinary research, it shows. Worth the credits, and Rosalyn Landor is flawless as usual.
This is a well written book in terms of characters, scenery, and witty dialog. However, I found myself drifting off during many parts that didn't keep my attention. I love historical romance and this is worth a credit, but the plot is not a great suspensful page turner. It is a light, romantic fair and a funny story about "spinster cove". I think I will give the second book a chance however.
This is not a corset ripper, but instead a touching story of a mother's love, a warrior's unwavering will to get his lass, and the coming of age of brave little brothers. I enjoyed the story immensely! Brad is an excellent narrator, he really makes the story!
After two hours, I had to turn it off. The voices of the brothers sound like they are all highly effeminate and unrealistic. It is just not the Julie I am accustomed to having started with her Highland series'. Too long, not the best choice for narration and I couldn't get through it. Just painful.
Julie has really done it again! A great heroin, with a new story line. No clammy, boring English fellows here - this Lord is just the right one to match wits with Christina. Excellent, highly recommend, enjoyed every minute! The narrarator switched from a young girl, a man, another man to a nasty old countess within seconds and you don't even notice.
Turned it off after one chapter, it was painful to listen to the bad writing in this. If you want to read about a highland gigalo, a slut for a queen, then I guess have it. It was the worst first chapter of a romance i have every read/listened to.
Please skip the audio version and download the book on your kindle. You will love the text and story, but will despise the narrator. I enjoyed the book immensely, it is just a poor choice for a narrator.
There are many more detailed reviews so I will save the paragraphs and tell you this is not a hard core erotic novel, thankfully, it is a great contemporary romance set in the Highlands with a WONDERFUL narrator, a great and realistic story line and fascinating characters and heroin. Buy it, well worth it!!! Can't wait to start the next ones.
I didn't pay attention to the first half, and couldn't take the second. Terrible narration, boring story.
I loved these books so decided to buy the audio for work time, however this narrator feels sounds like she is reading from a sheet of paper instead of sounding natural. She needs some practice, not enough differentiation in the voices which are vast between the girls. Recommend, but not a great narrator.
