I had not read any of Anthony Trollpe's books previously and now am hooked and working my way through them all... In my opinion, much better than Dickens. A thoroughly enjoyable "read" and Timothy West is outstanding. Recommended highly.
I quite enjoyed this book. the heroine is very honourable but rather tearful which is rather off putting.. Perhaps she is a reflection of her age. Elizabeth Gaskell's characters do not have the sparkle of Jane Austen's but Jane Austen sets the bar rather high and Elizabeth Gaskell writes a very readable and enjoyable story. She puts quite a lot of "social conscience" stuff in her books.... I suppose it is because she was the daughter and wife of a minister. This does rather make the main character too good to be true. However, it all comes out in the end and I like the book well enough to buy more of Elizabeth Gaskell's titles as they become available on Audible.
This is the first book I have bought in which Prunella Scales is the narrator.. She is excellent
Definitely. Overall I was sorry when it was finished.. The story doesn't have many highs and lows... It just trundles along. but it is an easy listen and you feel at the end of the book that you know and like the characters.
I don't think so. I bought this book because of the bargain price and terrific reviews. It is the sort of book I would have enjoyed as a teenager.... all Scottish Highands and handsome hero.... but overall pretty lightweight.
Struggled to keep going with it.... Not exactly boring but lacked substance
Davina Poter's performance was excellent.
Its length...... good soprific effect and put me to sleep
This book is in need of a really good editor... It is extremely tedious and much, much too long and is repititious and boring. The narrator read really well but the book needs desperately to be condensed and to get to the point. Over 40 hours of listening which I suppose is good for long distance travellers but I very quickly lost interest in the characters and was sorry I had bought it.
A typical; "fun read' by Georgette Heyer. For an easy, "no worries" reading experience she is hard to go past... She churned out Regency romances which she personally deprecated and which thousands of people all over the world looked forward to seeing available each year.. This one grows on you.... The heroine is more mature but there is a lot of enjoyable repartee between her and the older hero. I really enjoyed listening to this book in the Audible version more than I enjoyed the written word. The narrator is excellent. Highly recommended to all die hard GH fans.
I was really disappointed with this book.... It should have been so much better than it is... A vast, stimulating subject written and read in such a pedestrian way. Not for me thanks.
I originally bought this reading of "Pride and Prejudice" simply because it was the cheapest available and also it was one of my first purchases of an Audible book. However, I have to say I think it was an excellent choice as Helen Lisanti is a first class narrator and I have listened again and again to this well loved classic. She does have some difficulty with the male characterizations but she improves as the book progresses. I have since gone back and sampled the other readings of "Pride and Prejudice" and have only found one reading I think may be better than Helen Lisanti's and that is the one by Josephine Bailey. However, it is a much more expensive version..... This one, I think, is a bargain and I recommend it highly
A classic "Georgette Heyer" which has been let down in the audible format by the strange reading of the Duke of Avon character..... the narrator, to my mind, does not catch the nuances of this character at all..... which is a shame as the book is excellent..... The follow up book of "Devil's Cub" is narrated in a much improved style and is highly recommended.... I do hope my favourite of Heyer's Regency romances...i.e. "The Grand Sophy" soon makes it into the "available list" of Audible.com
