  • The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By Daniel James Brown
    • Narrated By Edward Herrmann
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Daniel James Brown's robust book tells the story of the University of Washington's 1936 eight-oar crew and their epic quest for an Olympic gold medal, a team that transformed the sport and grabbed the attention of millions of Americans. The sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the boys defeated elite rivals first from eastern and British universities and finally the German crew rowing for Adolf Hitler in the Olympic games in Berlin, 1936.

    "Absolutely compelling"
Have you listened to any of Edward Herrmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Herrmann's read feels like he's there with me telling me the story. I can't imagine either "The Boys in the Boat" or "Unbroken" being read by anyone else.

    Any additional comments?

I've never done this before, but as soon as I was done with this book I went back and started listening to it all over again. It's really that good.

  • All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Stephen Kinzer
    • Narrated By Michael Prichard

In a cloak-and-dagger story of spies, saboteurs, and secret agents, Kinzer reveals the involvement of Eisenhower, Churchill, Kermit Roosevelt, and the CIA in Operation Ajax, which restored Mohammad Reza Shah to power. Reza imposed a tyranny that ultimately sparked the Islamic Revolution of 1979 which, in turn, inspired fundamentalists throughout the Muslim world, including the Taliban and terrorists who thrived under its protection.

amazonman says: "Fascinating & Insightful View of US/ Iran History"
"Great & timely read, but I'll avoid the reader"

All the reviews laud the content, so let me submit my one gripe: the reader. I had to force myself to continue listening past the monotone and pedantic characteristics of the reader. I will actively avoid this reader from now on.

  • Naked in Baghdad: The Iraq War as Seen by National Public Radio's Correspondent

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Anne Garrels
    • Narrated By Anne Garrels
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

One of only sixteen unembedded American journalists who stayed in Baghdad's now-legendary Palestine Hotel throughout the American invasion of Iraq, NPR's Anne Garrels was at the very center of the storm. She brings us the sights, sounds, and smells of our latest war with unparalleled vividness and immediacy.

Native Texan says: "My favorite book of the year!"
"A peek into the life of a foreign journalist"

This is a compelling book, made even more so by Anne Garrels' narration. I listen almost exclusively to NPR, and their "voices" take on an intimate quality since they're with me almost everywhere I home, in the car, at friends' houses, or on my iPod while walking my dog! I found her descriptions of working in Iraq leading up to the war fascinating as I don't often consider the daily difficulties of the journalist on the ground. There are some books that are better when listened to, and this is one of them. The experience is enhanced by the fact that Anne Garrels and her husband are reading their own words. I highly recommend listening to this book.
