The male voice is fine but the female voice is so annoying that I almost quit listening many times.
I watched Kubrick's movie some time ago, before reading (listening to) the book. For me it is usually the other way round but this time I found the movie to be much better than the book. The book was unnecessarily long with too many details and long descriptions, most of which can be edited out without a loss.
Actually I felt like this about the few Stephen King books I have read in the past. So if you are a fan of his writing style, you will like this book too. I have stopped reading Stephen King a long time ago, but since I liked the movie so much I wanted to give the book a chance. But that was a mistake. This is a typical King book.
The narrator was good. His narration was the only thing that kept me from listening to the book at a faster speed.
The story overall is so and so, as I had expected. But the narration is very very bad. Especially the male voices were the worst. The main male character's voice sounded like a cave man!
It is yet another book out there which you do not gain or lose anything by reading or not reading it. On top of the weak plot, there are too many parts with food recipes, which some reviewers have mentioned as a plus, but if I wanted recipes, I would get a cook book.
This brings me to the title of my review. Some parts of the book may be very disturbing for vegetarians and vegans. Especially those parts where the author explains in detail how lobsters and oysters are prepared were among the most disturbing parts for me.
So vegetarians and vegans beware!
It was an OK listen. The story of course was very shallow, however, that was what I expected to begin with. So it was good to listen to when doing house chores or working out at the gym. The narrator was generally fine too. I think her voice was a very good match for Ivy's character. However, quite often she swallowed hard and the sound of it annoyed me throughout the book! I have listened to so many books before and I never noticed such an issue with any of them!
As far as books of this genre go, the erotic scenes were embedded in the whole story and were done well.
However, in gereneral, the writing quality of the book is quite poor. There are too many unnecessary repetitions that irritate the reader. Also the whole book is like a TV show where you have product placements on the scene. Some parts really sound annoyingly like advertisement.
The narrator was just OK, but she wasn't very successful with the different voices, especially the male ones. I usually was not able to understand who was speaking.
On the whole, I think it is a very sad story. All throughout the book, my dominant feeling was of sadness.
I would have given even a lower score if it were possible. I am not very squeamish but this book is audio porn! From the description and the cover of course I expected erotic scenes but I wasn't expecting this much. Be warned. Also the narration was the worst I heard on Audible till now. The narrator read the whole story in a flat tone. The book was just a waste of money and time.
I neither liked the story nor enjoyed the narration. The characters and the dialogues are not as captivating as the original P&P. I have to admit that I have not yet been able to find a P&P follow-up that I liked. Therefore I do not read them anymore. But some of the reviews were so good with this one that I decided to give it a shot. But it wasn't any better.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books. I've read it many times and have seen all film versions several times too. So I am not going into how much I love the book as a whole as well as all the characters in it. What I want to say is that the narration is excellent. After I listened to all available audio versions of this book on Audible, I decided to buy this one. It was a good choice. Maybe the others are as good too, but I do not regret my decision. Even though I know by heart what happens in which scene, I couldn't stop listening. The narration was captivating.
This is a very good book. The narrator also does a very good job. I enjoyed every minute.
