A compelling novel of desire, secrecy, and sexual identity, In One Person is a story of unfulfilled love—tormented, funny, and affecting—and an impassioned embrace of our sexual differences. Billy, the bisexual narrator and main character of In One Person, tells the tragicomic story (lasting more than half a century) of his life as a “sexual suspect,” a phrase first used by John Irving in 1978 in his landmark novel of “terminal cases,” The World According to Garp.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    No one

What could John Irving have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The characters are not at all believable. A transgender librarian has intimate relations with an 18 year old student and his family defends the adult?

What about John Benjamin Hickey’s performance did you like?

    Clear, good variations between characters.

William Lowell Kane and Abel Rosnovski, one the son of a Boston millionaire, the other a penniless polish immigrant-born on the same day near the turn of the century on opposite sides of the world-are brought together by fate and the quest of a dream. Two men - ambitious, powerful, ruthless - are locked in a relentless struggle to build an empire, fueled by their all-consuming hatred.

What would have made Kane and Abel better?

If the characters were not so 2 dimensional

Has Kane and Abel turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Just for this author

    Any additional comments?

The characters are completely not believable as actual human beings. Abel is all knowing and has spies everywhere but is unable to tell who is benefactor was? Both Kane and Abel live for their children but are willing to stop talking to them? Why was the woman on the train in Siberia? Closed into a coal hold for an extended period when it was hard to breathe after the first few minutes? I would think he would die of Black Lung Disease before the end of the journey. Is George a fool or a great worker? Henry became a congressman????

A tale of archetypal heroes and sweeping adventures, of dragons and princes and evil wizards, here is epic fantasy as only Stephen King could envision it.
