China Miéville doesn’t follow trends, he sets them. Relentlessly pushing his own boundaries as a writer—and in the process expanding the boundaries of the entire field—with Embassytown, Miéville has crafted an extraordinary novel that is not only a moving personal drama but a gripping adventure of alien contact and war. In the far future, humans have colonized a distant planet, home to sentient beings famed for a language unique in the universe, one that only a few altered human ambassadors can speak....

    "Loved This Book!"
    Overall

Complex, original, and as the best speculative fiction does, this book immerses a reader in a world they never imagined. A stunningly creative and original writer. It had me wishing this world were real and at the same time dreading the dangers the characters faced. The answers to those dangers were truly haunting. The narration was a perfect match to the story. This is fiction operating way at the top of the curve and a writer like no other. I'd be happy to see a sequel, another adventure in this world, or anything else Mr. Mieville wants to write. I've read three of his novels and will be reading all of them.

The Collaborator, a historical novel by S.L. Stebel, takes place in the aftermath of World War II. A high ranking Israeli official, Ernst Gottliebsohn, is accused of having conspired with the Nazis on the eve of his nation's first trade mission to Germany. Charged with defending himself, Gottliebsohn finds that he has no memory of anything that happened in his past; his life before emigrating to Israel is as much a mystery to him as it would be to a stranger.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would and will recommend this book in an instant. S. L. Stebel has managed to craft a superbly engrossing story populated by some of the most complex characters I've encountered in years. Most striking are the moral conflicts. Good people, people who share the same opinions, hopes, and fears, can have radically different ideas about how to deal with events, and those different ideas can lead to shattering outcomes. This is a book about a little-discussed and deeply important part of history, and I can't think of a better piece of writing about that time. How to heal after horror? Can you, or are there some people who still live, yet are destroyed? A fast-paced story, a deeply satisfying surprise ending, and a perfectly matched narrator make this audiobook a winner.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character was particularly fine, and grew in complexity in surprising ways throughout. There are no cardboard characters here anywhere.

Have you listened to any of Michael Bell???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to him previously, but would again. He handles character voices well and his delivery matched the material.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it was, but at the same time I didn't want it to end. I listened to it over the course of a week.

    Any additional comments?

I hope you will add more of S. L. Stebel's work!
