I am a big fan of Seth Godin. I am on Tribes on Ning, I have interviewed him in my blog, and I read most things he posts or publishes.
And for me, this is probably his best work to date. The entire concept of the purple cow is simple - be remarkable. But as always he supports this with many layers of examples, tactics and case studies.
I am a consultant and for me this book has helped a heck of a lot.
The interaction with subject experts across the broad sweep of history covered makes this a very interesting as well as entertaining book.
The tracking of writing through its impacts down the centuries was a very good way to tell this story.
I have already listened to this book three times and continue to go back to it. It is an outstanding sweep of history through a civilisation that was so key to the modern world, yet is not well known or understood.
The city itself. The walls the Hagia Sofia, halls chambers, hippodrome and so on. The sprawling city of Byzantium itself is an amazing backdrop to this awesome tale. The hippodrome, churches, Hagia Sofia, the walls; all played key roles in the culture, history and longevity of the empire.
This text is more than a broad sweep of key moments in a 1100 year empire; it contains lessons from throughout history that we have so quickly forgotten.
Short term political decisions, appeasement of aggressors, the origins of the renaissance; all of which appeared previously to be lost to history.
It is astounding to me that the Roman empire, or at least an empire that considered itself to be Rome, existed until 1453. 39 years before Columbus landed in the Americas.
A fascinating tale of an unknown historical landscape filled with tribes and events that have also been lost to the telling of the history of western civilisation.
From Sean, any day. But I found the authors use of the terms BCE and CE, instead of BC and AD to be highly offensive and a denial of 2000 years of history. I tried to get past this but, as a history book, it was in my ear every few minutes and in the end I could not continue to listen to it.
Steyn has uncovered what many already know but have either been too ineloquent or (sadly) too frightened to say for decades. This is a warning, the west either reclaims its heritage at the forefront of modern history, or we allow ourselves to be torn down into a morass powered by self loathing.
His comments on the war against manhood was extremely well researched.
Good, witty and well paced delivery.
Make the wrong people do the right thing
I have long been a fan of good poetry but knew little or nothing of the art behind the words. This was a fantastic introduction for me to the world of poetry, the history and great names in the area - as well as providing me with a lot of very good poems to think over and work through my mind. Liked it a lot.
No, it is something I have returned to several times and still working my way through parts of it.
I would recommend this to anybody with even a glancing knowledge or interest in this subject. The Khans, and Genghis as the founder of the dynasty, have had a more far reaching impact on the modern world than I ever could have known. Exceptionally engaging, truly informative, and an all round great book. I have listed to it a few times already.
I really liked this book and the other book that accompanied it on 50 e-Businesses.
The narrator isn't british - He's Australian! And after a lifetime of listening to American accents I found it very refreshing. The case studies were also close to home instead of the usual Wall Street plunderers whose stories have been toldl again and again.
Reading the chapter notations and acknowledgements was a little tiring though... fortunately they learned by the second book. (The 50 Internet businesses one..)
Good inspiring stuff, about names I know and not just retold stories of the great Silicon valley businesses.
I thought this book was fantastic and very inspiring. It is not everyday you get to take lessons from one of the people who is shaping the modern business world.
Great tips on what works, what doesn't, moving forward and all sorts of ins and outs from someone who has been there. I watched this company since before the turn of the century and I remain very inspired by this entire story.
If you want to start your own business, and you feel as though they are all lined up against you, then this book is for you.
I have been reading my children the Gruffalo since they were born, and this audio book has taken that to a whole new level. It is heir favorite book, one that they enjoy listening to again and again. And so do I. Masterful story telling for children of all ages.
