    J. R. R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor best known as the author of fantasy works like "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings." Listen as Tolkien reads "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil," "The Hoard," "Perry-The-Winkle," and "The Man in the Moon Came Down Too Soon." Also included is a reading of "A Elbereth Gilthoniel" in Elvish and "The Road Goes Ever on," sung by William Elvin with music by Donald Swann.

    Story

A couple of his stories, told by Tolkien himself, a short passage read in elven, and a song sung by the author. I won't give it away, but Tolkien envisioned the songs in a manner I bet you have never considered! Otherwise, nothing new here, just a chance to hear the master himself.

Nathaniel Hawthorne has taken some of the most striking and exciting Greek legends and adapted them for young readers. In this retelling, Hawthorne maintains the conceptions held by the original authors. This collection includes "The Minotaur", "The Pygmies", "The Dragon's Teeth", "Circe's Palace", "The Pomegranate Seeds", and "The Golden Fleece".

The reading of this material was so deadpan, so boring that I could not get beyond about 15 minutes. My 6 year old reads better than this so-called "performance."

Since 1990, when Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time® burst on the world with its first book, The Eye of the World, listeners have been anticipating the final scenes of this extraordinary saga, which has sold over 40 million copies in over 32 languages. When Robert Jordan died in 2007, all feared that these concluding scenes would never be written. But working from notes and partials left by Jordan, established fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson stepped in to complete the masterwork.

This true modern masterpiece is built around the two fateful words that make up the title and herald the end - “Alas, Babylon.” When a nuclear holocaust ravages the United States, a thousand years of civilization are stripped away overnight, and tens of millions of people are killed instantly. But for one small town in Florida, miraculously spared, the struggle is just beginning, as men and women of all backgrounds join together to confront the darkness....

Noe says: "Outstanding story of post-apocalyse."
"One of the first Nuclear holocaust novels"

    Story

WARNING: the blurb characterizes this as a "true modern masterpiece." NOT TRUE. This book was written in 1959. It is extremely dated. An interesting look at how society used to think, with its references to ongoing segregation in the South, and use of the "N" word.
If you are looking for a historical view of what a nuclear holocaust was thought to be in the late 50s, this is your book. But it is FAR from "modern."
The story is well written, and well narrated. Some of the technical parts are downright laughable in hindsight.

The first of Zelazny's famous Amber Chronicles, this is an excellent book, and a great read. Unfortunately, the lack luster narration is about what you might expect from a Junior high School play...except your kid isn't in this one, so why are you here?

Is it possible that there exists an ancient mystery that holds the secret of America's future? That this mystery lies behind everything from 9/11 to the collapse of the global economy? That ancient harbingers of judgment are now manifesting in America? That God is sending America a prophetic message of what is yet to come? Before its end as a nation, there appeared in ancient Israel nine specific warnings and omens of national destruction - these same Nine Harbingers are now manifesting in America with profound ramifications.

    Story

The plot and "mystery" of this story si so transparent you find yourself wondering how the main character can be so dense. The author has strung a lot of coincidences together and tried to make it into some big hidden secret about America being the second incarnation of ancient Israel. Hinging entirely on 2 verses from the Book of Isaiah, the narrative completely ignores the fact that America is a Christian nation, NOT a Jewish nation, and that the ancient laws of Judaism do not apply to Christians, followers of the second covenant.
    Don't waste your time.

That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Wow! There is so much more depth and motivation, as well as story itself that was left out by the movie. Skip the movie and read the book. The movie is pure action, a true disservice to a book of great depth and obviously much research on the part of the author,.

"To Build a Fire," the best-known of Jack London's many short stories, tells the tale of a solitary traveler on the Yukon Trail accompanied only by his dog as they endure the extreme cold. A classic narrative of a battle for survival against the forces of nature, "To Build a Fire" is London at his best. Also included here are "The Red One," "All Gold Canyon," "A Piece of Steak," "The Love of Life," "Flush of Gold," "The Story of Keesh," and "The Wisdom of the Trail."

    Story

These classic Jack London stories are engaging, if a little tedious in detail...at times. The problem here is the narration. Little to no inflection. In fact, it is difficult to tell when a story ends, as the reader moves on to the title of the next story without a pause, and with no change in voice or inflection while reading the title and starting the next story.

If you could sum up Agincourt in three words, what would they be?

Well written and well narrated, this tells the story of Henry II's siege and battle at Agincourt in a very accessible way. The story is engaging, with close attention to historical detail.

Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) rocks this mock bedtime story, capturing a hilarious range of emotions as the voice of a father struggling to get his child to sleep. Go the F**k to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland.

Would you try another book from Adam Mansbach and Ricardo Cortes (cover illustration) and/or Samuel L. Jackson?

I doubt it. I don't know why he did this one. It was pointless.

Has Go the F--k to Sleep turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Probably

What didn’t you like about Samuel L. Jackson’s performance?

He was OK, but the whole effort was pointless.

What character would you cut from Go the F--k to Sleep?

    The book itself.
