Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

Joseph says: "Good historical setting, but loose story."
    "Sweeping epic"
    Overall

Great characters and setting/sense of the times. This one just draws you in.

Passionate, earthy, deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable contribution to modern fiction: a vibrant new perspective of female life in the age that shaped present day civilization and values.

If you like The Red Tent, try The Harlot by the Side of the Road, a recounting of some of the most startling and explicit writings from The Old Testament.

    R. S. Herron says: "The key word is 'fiction'"
    "Fabulous historical novel"
    Overall

This is a great story. The author's presentation of the culture and setting was fascinating.

Ulysses is regarded by many as the single most important novel of the 20th century. It tells the story of one day in Dublin, 16 June 1904, largely through the eyes of Stephen Dedalus (Joyce's alter ego from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) and Leopold Bloom, an advertising salesman. Both begin a normal day, and both set off on a journey around the streets of Dublin, which eventually brings them into contact with one another.

Timothy says: "This book shouldn't be"
    "Joyce"
    Overall

I was unable to really read or understand this novel during college. I thought that listening might make me more able to appreciate Joyce--Or at least complete it. Unfortunately that didn't work.

Narrator was boring, but I might have been biased.

This brilliant new treatment of the world's oldest epic is a literary event on par with Seamus Heaney's wildly popular Beowulf translation. Esteemed translator and best-selling author Stephen Mitchell energizes a heroic tale so old it predates Homer's Iliad by more than a millennium.

George says: "A defense of this "translation""
    "Great"

I enjoyed this version of this story very much. The narrator is excellent.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

Chris says: "Great Pulitzer Winning novel!"
    "OK"
    Overall

This book has a great premise, but it did not work for me. It seemed too long, to the point where the maing character seemed whiny. The narrator was OK during the lighte or funny parts, but I found him annoying during the more serious/dramatic parts of the story.

To me, the Virgin Suicides by the same author is a MUCH more enjoyable listen

Considered by some to be the world's greatest novel, Anna Karenina contains two plots: the tragedy of Madame Karenina, in love with a man who is not her husband; and the story of Konstantine Levin, a sensitive man whose personal philosophy is Tolstoy's reason for writing about him.

    D. Littman says: "A classic, classically read"
    "Very good"

Of course this is a great novel with excellent character development and intriguing plot. The narrator is very good as well.

Sons and Lovers was the first of Lawrence's major works, and is still considered to be one of his best. The 1913 novel, partly autobiographical and set in the coalmining village of Bestwood, is notable for being the first English novel to be genuinely working-class in origin and focus.

Jimcin says: "Great book and good reading"

Great development of characters in this novel. Author evokes the time and place very well. Narrator is very good.
