This book is just not put together very well. From the writing style to story to character.
What I liked least was the fact that the main character and his friend are in highschool when the story starts. If I make it out right, 6 months later his friend is an internationally known space pilot who cavalierly takes control of Space Shuttles etc.
Mainly, this is a war story. VERY BADLY WRITTEN WAR STORY.
If you want a good book that is totally the opposite of this writing wise, try either Old Man's War or Armour by Steakley.
I liked a lot of the detail and writing style of Honsinger.
Why I'm giving this story only 2 stars is because the plot just gets so cheesy and heavy handed towards the end. The first two thirds of this do unravel slowly in a good way. The characters are very 2 dimensional, but the details are well thought through. Then Bam! Things get all out of whack and loopy. I had to groan through some of the later plot parts.
I'll try this author again however. I'd like to see if he matures as a writer. I enjoyed the over all flow well enough to become invested in the story and then disappointed.
I had a colleague recommend this one to me. I tried it out and am having a hard time giving it even two stars.
1. Characters are paper thin, secondary to the story.
2. Plot. WTF?
3. Out of water Military story. I've read much better. Whats up with so many authors taking a group of military persons and putting them into a weird scifi environment where they are fish out of water, but manage to win the day anyhow. Seems like every single one of them has the same plot structure and characters.
I'd recommend the Lost Legion series over this one.
What the heck? This book won so many awards. I don't get it. Simple, characters were ok, plot was very thin...
Tedious, plodding, yuckiness with characters you cant enjoy
Let me save you the bother of wasting a buck. skip this one.
One of the best sequels I have ever come across. Better than the first book!
Caliban's War is even better than its predecessor, Leviathan Wakes. The writing and story are more involved and assured. Its nice to see Corey getting better and better as an author.
However... In my mind... Corey has a need to make his works too epic. They become too much like a comic book super hero saving the day against impossible odds stories.
Still very worth listening too. I love this author. Just wish he would tone down the scale a little.
3/4's of the way through this book, I was in awe of it. I was thinking about how i was going to give it 5 stars and be happy to do so.
I wont give anything away, this book is still very much worth reading. It just got very forced, to self important, and maybe 100 pages too long.
wow, this book is just plain bad. The Characters have already been fully developed.... or as much as they are going to be it seems. The plot is kind of looney and if you think about it, it makes little sense. A real disappointment
This author... does not know how to write. or he is way to young. ugh. Just painful to listen to.
