At nearly 18, easy-going Benedict Juliard has no stronger ambition than to ride in steeplechases as an amateur jockey. His father, George, driven towards a life of public service and politics, asks his son to enter into a pact that neither of them will commit any act that could destroy the father's growing reputation and career.

She was from the hills of Yorkshire, country born and bred. He was a city boy. By the stream where they fished they were two young people falling in love. Overhead, the bombers roared, threatening to blow their idyllic world, so young, so fresh, to smithereens.

    Story

I throughly enjoyed this story. Very convincing picture of a developing romance against the backdrop of war and a bomber station, especially given that the war was still ongoing at the timing of this book's publication. Although most of the book was quite slow paced, there were definitely some exciting periods towards the end. I greatly enjoyed what appears to be a personal appearance of the author in his own book! Excellent narration, well suited to Shute's quiet, understated style. I'm so glad that another of my "top 5" Shute favourites has been added to Audible!

Rich and handsome, the hope of ambitious mothers and despair of his sisters, the Marquis of Alverstoke sees no reason to put himself out for anyone. But when a distant connection applies to him for help, he finds himself far from bored.

This has always been my favorite of all of Heyer's books, and when I finally had a chance to revist the book in audio, it was just as wonderful a book as I remembered. Kids, misbehaving dog, longsuffering & reluctant guardian, pork jelly, not to mention excellent narration, make this a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Dick Francis is the author of dozens of best-selling mysteries set at the racetrack, involving jockeys, horses, and the glamorous world of horseracing. The most delightful aspect of his stories is that one need know nothing about horses and racing to enjoy them thoroughly.

    "good story but painful narration"

Found the story to be one of the better ones of the series, but the narration was painful - the upward inflection at the end of every sentence (especially in the second half of the book) grew ever more of a distraction!

I discovered Nevil Shute in my late teens and was thrilled to see this old favorite finally available with Audible. As with many Nevil Shute books, it starts off slowly but then becomes completely engrossing. Fascinating picture of life in Malaya and Australia in the '40s and early '50s, engaging characters. Excellent narration, perfect for the story. Am hoping that other Shute favorites will be added soon - Pied Piper, No Highway, Trustee from the Toolroom, Pastoral, In the Wet.

In this classic story, first published in 1906, a false accusation places the father in jail, leaving his wife and three children on their own. Circumstances force mother and the children to leave their ideal life in London to live near a train station in a rustic cottage. As the good natured children work to rescue their father, they befriend and help others along the way.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this classic children's story. It was beautifully read, despite the strong American accent combined with rather odd attempts at the British accents.

    "good book, but disappointing abridgement"
    Overall

The story's great, the narrator is very good, but the abridgement is disappointing (although someone who has not read the book would probably enjoy this abridgement, despite the fact that many of the best characterization bits are missing). The completely unnecessary musical interludes are horrible - very melodramatic, corny, quite distracting.
