"This author is a good new find..."
I enjoyed this one as much for its setting in the low country of South Carolina as for the story and characters, which were both a little different and quirky - just my kind of read. Who would have thought there was a story in a country bumpkin (!), a government mortgage lender and an Inspector General's investigator? Hope to see more of these characters as their relationship develops (or not).
"I liked this one!"
A character study with interesting characters and some shady pasts, all parceled out a little at a time. You soon suspect what has to happen, but getting there is all the fun. Will be looking for more by this author.
"Starts a little slowly..."
...but gets interesting quickly. Jack Zwytek can find more trouble than most other characters combined, and has enough foibles to make him interesting and human. I'll be looking for the next book to come along to see what else can happen. Worth the credit.
"Very interesting concept"
This was as unique a plot as I've seen in a long time, and I liked the shifts from present to past, but the it would have been much stronger without the ungainly coincidences. Good character development and good sense of the lives of the poor in the 1930s. Worth the time.
"Bad guys running the army? Really?"
Take your pick here - there are bad guys everywhere you look. But the real culprit is something of a surprise, and the heroine does way too much hand-wringing.
"A real head-scratcher here"
The symbolism of dreams is examined ad nauseum here, and the characters are a little odd, but on the whole, worth finishing.
"A New Mystery Heroine Has Been Born!"
This 2nd book in the series has another imaginative plot and the return of several complex and interesting characters. And Joyce Bean is a great narrator. Waiting for the next one.
"John Puller is back!"
I really would like to know why Bobby Puller is spending the rest of his life in Fort Leavenworth - no details in this book either. But John Puller Jr is the next Jack Reacher (the REAL Jack Reacher, not the pitiful substitute currently in the movies). Strong, tough, smart - and learning to live with his father, finally. Let's have more.
"There's promise here"
Interesting characters, interesting plot - this series shows some promise. I did find it a little far-fetched, but certainly in the realm of possibility. Will definitely try the next in the series.
"Another winner from Michael Connolly"
Please, let Harry Bosch live forever - he's too good to ever grow old or retire. And if he ever shows up in a movie, let him be a younger Tom Selleck or Sam Elliott.
