Told from the point of view of the men who waged this steel-shattering battle, The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors captures Navy pilots attacking enemy battleships with makeshift weapons and sacrificial valor, a veteran commander improvising tactics never taught in Annapolis, and young crews from across America rising to an impossible challenge.

The more I read about the war in the Pacific and the more I talk to the men who lived throught that nightmare the more I really apprieciate what they did for me. It is hard to imagine the horror those boys lived through and most of them were only young boys. They sure didn't stay boys for long. They became men in a matter of minutes. Very nice work by Mr. Hornfischer,

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

My daughter talked me into listening to this book. She thought it was better than Harry Potter. Well to me it sure isn't Harry Potter. This just wasn't my cup of tea at all. Don't think I will see the movie and I know I won't order the second book. This book just did't fit to what I call entertainment or good writting. Took for ever to tell a very simple story. Suzanne Collins repeated herself a lot. She kept going over issues that I thought once said was enough. Just not for me.

It was more than an incident: It was a deadly assault across the 38th parallel. It was the Korean War. In the fear and the frenzy of battle, those who had served with heroism before were called again by America to man the trenches and sandbag bunkers. From Pusan to the Yalu, they drove forward with commands too new and tanks too old, brothers in war, bonded together in battle as they had never been in peace....

I found this book good enough. I will admit that I didn't like it as well as some other works by Coonts. His Grafton series is excellent. It is good enough for me to listen to the second book in this series. The narrator J. Charles is a fine reader but I found myself thinking Dick Hill would have done better. I also found myself thinking the story line was a little on the outside. I like fiction stories that maybe, sort of kind of, with some imagination be true. I found myself thinking my foot to this story line and the interactions of the main characters. Over all it was OK. Coonts has done better. I hope the series picks up steam.

They were the young ones, the bright ones, the ones with the dreams. From the Nazi-prowled wastes of North Africa to the bloody corridors of Europe, they honorably answered the call. War - it was their duty, their job, their life. They marched off as boys and they came back - those who made it - as soldiers and professionals forged in the heat of battle....

At first I wondered why the book was titled the Lieutenants. The narrative just didn't seem to fit the title, not that I minded but it seemed to talk about the Colonels and Generals and not the Lieutenants. After awhile it became clear that two Lieutenants were the central focus of this book. If Audible had the second book of the series "The Captains I would have down loaded it right now. I will when it is available. Good stuff.

Everything starts somewhere. For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997. A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington. Reacher is ordered undercover - to find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control. Local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux has a thirst for justice - and an appetite for secrets.

From David Baldacci - the modern master of the thriller and number-one worldwide best-selling novelist - comes a new hero: a lone Army Special Agent taking on the toughest crimes facing the nation. John Puller is a combat veteran and the best military investigator in the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigative Division. His father was an Army fighting legend, and his brother is serving a life sentence for treason in a federal military prison. Puller has an indomitable spirit and an unstoppable drive to find the truth.

I am sure we will be reading about this in the papers. If Lee Child doesn't view this book as a copyright infringement on his Jack Reacher series then something is wrong. Baldacci is certainly a better writer than this. The Jack Reacher series is a good read but my word it isn't worth copying. The army, the coffee, the clock in his head, being well over 6 ft tall, the headbutt to the nose, walking rather than driving, the only thing Puller has that Reacher doesn't is a change of clothes. If I didn't know better I would think David Baldacci is a pen name for Lee Child. Simply to close for me. Don't put me on the jury. Child would win hands down. Baldacci gets an "F" for lack of orginality.

The book focuses on four naval commanders, two American, two Japanese, whose lives collided at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944 - a clash involving more ships (almost 300), more men (nearly 200,000) and covering a larger area (more than 100 thousand square miles, roughly the size of the British Isles) than any naval battle in recorded history.

I have listened to a lot of books about the Navy and Marine WWII battles in the south and central pacific. Most were accounts from people who were there some were fiction. Thomas did a very fine job of putting a real face on the commanders of the naval forces. At times I thought he was a little hard on the Americans and not hard enought on the Japanes. Halsey was painted out to be to driven as an admiral. From where I stand (which is in the cheap seats) thank god for men like Halsey yes he made some mistakes but over all he and the other admirals did a wonderful job. A fine work by Thomas I enjoyed it.

Lee Child has really grown as a writter from "The Killing Floor" to "Worth Dying For". I have listened to all his current books and Dick Hill is a real winner as a narrator. To me this was Child's best work. I am very much looking forward to "The Affair". I normally listen to my books in the car but Worth Dying For was so good I listened to it in the house as well. You can listent to the Jack Reacher books in any order you want, I did them in order and I like the way Child's builds on the earlier books. Very nice.
