  • Orson Welles: A Biography

    • UNABRIDGED (22 hrs and 18 mins)
    • By Barbara Leaming
    • Narrated By Grace Conlin

Genius, artist, monstre sacré, Orson Welles had one of the most brilliant careers in show business. Here he confides his most intimate feelings and recollections of his life. With remarkable detail and intimacy, Barbara Leaming reveals the private Welles: from child prodigy and young lion in Dublin and New York, to the succès de scandale of his The War of the Worlds broadcast; from his auspicious directing debut with the legendary Citizen Kane in his 20s to the sabotage of his further directing career.

If you could sum up Orson Welles in three words, what would they be?

    Brilliant, Driven, Humanitarian

Who was your favorite character and why?

Orson is the most important and my favorite character. No one was more collectively brilliant than he. In his early life he was as ego centric as most are at that age, but he did not stay there. Later on, (thou still driven) he would reach out to others. Was more caring and giving. Hi last phone call (the night he died( was to the mother of a close director friend, asking how she was and reminding her to take her meds. I have loved Orson for over 50 years of my life. Orson was yet another example of the good that God gave to us. My friend has been gone for over 25 years and I miss him still....

What about Grace Conlin’s performance did you like?

What a blessing that our reader was Grace Conlin. She seemed to very much understand the nature and depth of this great man. A performer (in this case) has only their voice to tell the story. However, dear Ms. Conlin read Leaming's words like she had known Orson all her life. This wonderful lady is such an artist. At times, I was so drawn buy her ability to communicate it seemed like she and I were sharing wonderful memories of this man I have loved for so long. Thank you so much Ms. Conlin. There just are NO words to describe your abilities and care..

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

NO! The book was over 20 hours long. Actually I wanted to take my time. Knowing early on that this audio book was a pleasure I did not want end anytime soon.

    Any additional comments?

If you are into the theater, old time radio, or the movies, this book is for you. It is well worth the money and your time. Do yourself a favor. If you love the fine arts, this book is for you.

  • The Federalist Papers (Unabridged Selections)

    • NONE (6 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, James Madison
    • Narrated By Jim Killavey

Michael says: "An audio book for all Americans"
"An audio book for all Americans"

True, it is not a good narration at all. However this is one of the most important writings of our Republic, and it was a joy to hear it spoken. For in this wonderful document Madison, Jay, and Hamilton, describe for us just what they meant when they wrote this governing document. The key to understanding the book is to understand the concept of "Originalism." Originalists believe the words of the Constitution mean what the Framers intended them to mean. When there is a question about a text, Originalists go to the documents written by the Framers to get clarification. The Federalist Papers, contemporary letters, and notes from the Constitutional Convention can shed light on ambiguous terms in the text of the Constitution.
Originalists honor the first Article of the Constitution, which gives Congress the job of creating federal laws. An Originalists judge will not attempt to impose his own views on society by "legislating from the bench". The federal judiciary's job is to apply the laws that the elected representatives in Congress make - and ultimately to apply the Constitution. There are few things in our country that you can point to and say, "this is true." But this is one of them. I would give it 5 stars if it had a better narration.

  • Losing America: Confronting a Reckless and Arrogant Presidency

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Robert C. Byrd
    • Narrated By Grover Gardner

In the months and years following September 11, Robert C. Byrd has viewed with alarm what he considers to be a "slow unraveling of the people's liberties", when all dissenting voices were stilled and awesome power swung suddenly to the president to fight a "war on terror". This path violates historical American principles, it shows no regard for the balance of power or the role of the Congress; it invades our privacy; and it eliminates public participation in and understanding of government.

    "Losing America (Unabridged)"

Losing America by Senator Robert Byrd, is a moving and wonderful example of someone who understands the reality of the US Constitution, the rule of law, and the separation of powers. As an Independent, I don't always find myself in agreement. In fact I disagree with the distinguished Sentor on many occations, but on this very important topic, he is right on the money. Since most citizens have never read the Constitution, let alone know what it means, it has become very easy for the "elite" of the country to unlock the chains that was placed on the Federal Government and are now on the people of this country. If our founding fathers could see what has happened, how the last 3 Presidents have disregarded the law especially the current resident, they would recoil in horror. It does not matter where truth may be found or who even may speak it, but when truth does rise to the top it is like a cold glass of water to a thirsty man. This wonderful audio book tells the truth. Bravo Mr. Byrd.
