    Completely interesting listen, but with a unique blend of respect and contempt for the protagonist.

    Clearly a very bright guy, he makes his case very convincingly that hacking is, for him, a matter of personal challenge and problem solving, and not to exploit in any major way the systems he hacks. However he demonstrates an astonishing lack of understanding regarding how he has put people out and caused trouble. There is very little remorse for the incidental casualties of his game. While I can sympathize with the complaints of the police not playing by the rules, it is a curious argument coming from someone who spent his life breaking them.

    Balram Halwai is a complicated man. Servant. Philosopher. Entrepreneur. Murderer. Balram tells us the terrible and transfixing story of how he came to be a success in life - having nothing but his own wits to help him along. Through Balram's eyes, we see India as we've never seen it before: the cockroaches and the call centers, the prostitutes and the worshippers, the water buffalo and, trapped in so many kinds of cages that escape is (almost) impossible, the white tiger.

    With a charisma as undeniable as it is unexpected, Balram teaches us that religion doesn't create morality and money doesn't solve every problem.

    The hardest part of this book was to take the main character seriously. With such a fake accent the entire book felt like a caricature, and I just simply didn't have any attachment to any characters or consequences. Whether that was due to the narration or not is impossible to say, but I just didn't feel any weight behind the story line. Such good reviews make me hesitant to make a final judgement against the book, but the audio production certainly left me wanting.

    Patty and Walter Berglund were the new pioneers of old St. Paul - the gentrifiers, the hands-on parents, the Whole Foods generation. Patty was the ideal sort of neighbor, who could tell you where to recycle your batteries and how to get the local cops to do their job. She was an enviably perfect mother and the wife of Walter's dreams. Together with Walter - environmental lawyer, commuter cyclist, total family man - she was doing her small part to build a better world.

    I agree wholeheartedly with other reviewers who are conflicted between the good writing but the unsympathetic characters. For the most part an entirely fulfilling book, but at many times not enjoyable, due to characters that were hard to spend time with.

    The narration was very enthusiastic and engaging, however towards the middle I began to wonder if it was effecting my interpretation of the characters. Each is highly flawed, but also each has redeeming qualities; I wonder if I was reading the book if I would have perceived their subtleties better.
