I love the Vor world that Ms. McMaster Bujold has created. It feels real to me and I want to know what happens to these people I've come to know. But this book just makes me miss Miles. It's like attending a family reunion only to find out that your favorite cousin isn't coming. Not a bad book, but Ivan just isn't as interesting as Miles. After reading this book I re-read Memory. In retrospect, this book feels more like an Afterword. I'm glad to know what became of Ivan but can't see myself ever reading this one again.
I love Mr. Grover's performances. I always feel that he loves the material as much as I do and takes great care to accurately portray the author's intention.
I think lots of stories have been written about parents not having a clue. Maybe my problem with this book is due to not having any children myself and to having parents very much involved in my life as I was growing up. Add to this the fact that my partner is an inner-city school teacher who has very real stories about the behavior of "children" who have completely uninvolved or absent parents and I am left with a main character whose deliberate ignorance comes across as infuriating. If you are that uninvolved and clueless about your own kids, do us all a favor and stop having them please. I just found this book and especially the main character more frustrating and nonsensical than anything. But at least I cared enough to finish the thing. That's something.
Deliciously dark and twisted is how I would describe this book. It's like watching a train wreck - you can't look away. Both of the main characters are outrageously bad but boy is it entertaining. I like that the author doesn't clearly make one character a shining example of human perfection and the other "the bad one". My loyalties kept changing as new information was uncovered. This was just so much decadent fun! Even now, months later, I think of this book. I'm still conflicted about the ending but, really, it's just a minor detail that in no way changes the amount of enjoyment I got from this book.
