Winston Churchill is perhaps the most important political figure of the 20th century. His great oratory and leadership during the Second World War were only part of his huge breadth of experience and achievement. Studying his life is a fascinating way to imbibe the history of his era and gain insight into key events that have shaped our time.

Celebrated crime master and two-time Edgar Award winner James Lee Burke returns with a gorgeously crafted, brutally resonant chronicle of violence along the Texas-Mexico border. Sheriff Hackberry Holland patrols a small Southwest Texas border town, meting out punishment and delivering justice in his small square of this magnificent but lawless land. When an alcoholic ex-boxer named Danny Boy Lorca begs to be locked up after witnessing a man tortured to death by a group of bandits, Hack and his deputy, Pam Tibbs, slowly extract the Indian man’s gruesome tale.

    top 15%

Who was your favorite character and why?

    all the characters were great

What does Will Patton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

his ability to assume distinct and entertaining verbal identities is unparallelled

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    fascinating characters, great story

    Any additional comments?

this time Burke goes WAY over board with the metaphors and verbal allusions. i read and listen to almost every thing he writes but this is entirely too cumbersome. i often found myself saying "all right all ready, get to the point ! ". still well worth the price and Will Patton is out standing.

When his picture appeared on the cover of Texas Monthly, Joaquin Jackson became the icon of the modern Texas Rangers. Nick Nolte modeled his character on him in the movie Extreme Prejudice. Jackson even had a speaking part of his own in The Good Old Boys with Tommy Lee Jones. But the role that Jackson has always played the best is that of the man who wears the silver badge cut from a Mexican cinco peso coin, a working Texas Ranger.

yes, but with reservations. this is an interesting story but not very polished. i liked it as a tail of a modern cowboy lawman and enjoyed listening but i would not go out on a limb to recommend it.

What made the experience of listening to Hot Money the most enjoyable?

Dick Francis tells a great story and they are all different. there is nothing horrible in a Francis book, no cringe making imagery to bum you out. Just a clever well written story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

i liked them all. always a collection of colorful, eccentric, and unusual people made very true to life.

What about Tony Britton’s performance did you like?

    he gets the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

lots of laughs at the foibles and absurdities.

    Any additional comments?

if you like Dick Francis you will like this book. if you want an interesting light mystery with clever dialogue and believable characters who are very human you will like this one. if you want dark, violent, twisted emotions and a break neck plot that makes your heat race don't get this book.

Back on the job after an involuntary leave of absence, LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch is ready for a challenge. But his first case is a little more than he bargained for. It starts with the body of a Hollywood producer in the trunk of a Rolls-Royce, shot twice in the head at close range - what looks like "trunk music", a Mafia hit.

Would you consider the audio edition of Trunk Music to be better than the print version?

the advantage of audio is the ability to listen when i could not read, ie in the car. the advantage of reading is making sure you get the text, the ability to re-read. i enjoy both. however if the reader is really good i look forward to listening.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

yes. story is tight and the reader is great.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

he knows the story and delivers it

    Any additional comments?

every thing Connelly, James Lee Burke or John Sanford writes is worth reading or listening too. and all of their readers are excellent. i can't wait for each new book and have pretty much listened to and or read them all.

Ancient Egypt. Land of the Pharaohs. A kingdom built on gold. A legend shattered by greed. Now the Valley of Kings lies ravaged by war, drained of its lifeblood, as weak men inherit the cherished crown. On the eve of the festival of Osiris, the loyal subjects of the Pharaoh gather in Thebes to pay tribute to their leader.

Exploding with all the passion and rage of a bygone time, River God is a masterpiece of historical writing.

the story was very cumbersome. i have read and listened to many of Wilbur Smith's books and generally liked all the rest but i eventually quite listening which i have only done with one other book and i have listened to.

Has River God turned you off from other books in this genre?

no. the genre is fine and many of Smiths other books are good.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Dick Hill?

    yes

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from River God?

this was just cumbersome writing. an example of word and metaphor over kill.

Considered by some to be the world's greatest novel, Anna Karenina contains two plots: the tragedy of Madame Karenina, in love with a man who is not her husband; and the story of Konstantine Levin, a sensitive man whose personal philosophy is Tolstoy's reason for writing about him.

Would you listen to Anna Karenina again? Why?

yes. it is a story worth telling, told very well.

What other book might you compare Anna Karenina to and why?

war and piece. both Tolstoy with similar themes and both artfully told.

What does Nadia May bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

verbal sense of emotion. i would also recommend reading this book because you will want to re-read and reflect on the message.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

a story about what is really important in life, and what is not. and how we often cant tell which is which until its too late.

    Any additional comments?

just listen and let it flow. the different Russian character names are easier to follow than War and Piece, which i kept rewinding in the beginning, but it is still better to just let the book

    Overall

This is NOT a mystery thriller. Although the writing technique is good the story is a cheesy romance novel, or at least what I would expect one to be if I wanted to read one which I did not. If you like this style it is great but I quit listening which I almost never do because I am so cheap with my credits. I like histories, thrillers if they have some realism, and mysteries. The category and description of this book sounded great and it could have been a good story but it is written like a soap opera and the only thing that is missing is a guy named Fabio and some butter. Unfortunately the narration is in keeping with the style of the book, breathless women and for the men, female voices talking in fake deep baritones.
