He was born Temujin, son of a khan, raised in a clan of hunters migrating across the steppe. Temujin's young life was shaped by a series of brutal acts: the betrayal of his father by a neighboring tribe, his family left to die on the harsh plain. But Temujin endured, and from then on, he was driven by a fury to survive in the face of death, to kill before being killed, and to conquer enemies from beyond the horizon.

Would you listen to Genghis again? Why?

yes yes yes - the story was fantastic, and I cannot praise Stefan Rudnicki enough.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Genghis?

This: blood mixed with mare's milk. :: shudder :: Also, the quest for the eagle, the constant struggle on the steppes, and Temujin's strength of character.

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! I'm a gamer gal who especially loves RPG-style games with quests and missions and "find the princess in the castle". This book, which is nothing more or less than one epic quest, was right up my alley. I could see it unfolding in front of me, and more than once, wished for the movie version. But not just any movie - an EIGHTIES movie. It would be epic. (And epically expensive, omg the licensing fees alone)

In the cold Toronto winter of 1895, the naked body of a servant girl is found frozen in a deserted laneway. The young victim was pregnant when she died. Detective William Murdoch soon discovers that many of those connected with the girl's life have secrets to hide. Was her death on attempt to cover up a scandal in one of the city's influential families?

I listen to audiobooks in roughly 40 minute chunks during my work commute - much like many other people on this site, I suspect. Usually it's not a problem, but this book was occasionally difficult to follow. Jennings uses flashbacks and multiple points of view, which are probably crystal clear in print, but were sometimes confusing in audio. I liked the characters, especially poor Murdoch and the befuddlement of his personal life. It was a good read, a nice one, and down the line I'll pick up book 2 of the series.

David Marantz gives excellent narration! I loved the consistency of his choices - each character was uniquely voiced, with his or her own accent, which did more than just differentiate them from each other, but related to their history and who they were.

Victorian London is a cesspool of crime, and Scotland Yard has only 12 detectives - known as “The Murder Squad” - to investigate thousands of murders every month. Created after the Metropolitan Police’s spectacular failure to capture Jack the Ripper, The Murder Squad suffers rampant public contempt. They have failed their citizens. When Walter Day, the squad’s newest hire, is assigned the case of the murdered detective, he finds a strange ally in the Yard’s first forensic pathologist, Dr. Bernard Kingsley.

What made the experience of listening to The Yard the most enjoyable?

I found that I fell in love with the characters. The intertwining storylines were interesting, and there were a few genuine surprises. I listen to my books on my 40 minute commute, and there were times I was a little late in because I had to sit in the parking lot to hear how the scene turned out! I also love historical fiction, so this little peek into the early days of Scotland Yard was most enjoyable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I found I needed a little break here and there, mostly due to the somewhat repetitive nature of "let's explain how thumbprints work to everyone all over again" - but it was a necessary evil, I think.

    Any additional comments?

I read on Goodreads that this is book one of a planned series. Hooray! I can't wait for the rest - I want to spend more time in this world.
