Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

since I've read this!" books. Wow, what a waste of time and a credit. While the premise could have been great if better developed, it droned on and never came to a real conclusion. Very disappointing. Based on this book, I won't read another Atwood.

She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

Would you try another book from Kate Morton and/or Caroline Lee?

Probably not. This one was too long and bogged down with needless details. I found myself checking to see how long was left because I was bored. I wouldn't want to waste my time again.

Would you be willing to try another book from Kate Morton? Why or why not?

    Which scene was your favorite?

The twist scene, but unfortunately I knew it was coming.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The ending was good but after such a long build up it was predictable.

    Any additional comments?

This book probably would have been good if it had been half as long. It was just way to bogged down and slow moving. I never listen to abridged versions of books because I generally feel so much is lost when the details are cut out. This one would likely be MUCH better abridged. I wanted to like it, but unfortunately found myself bored overall.
