When Venetian detective Commissario Guido Brunetti is called to investigate a presumed suicide in Venice's elite military academy, his inquiries are immediately met with a wall of silence. The young man is the son of a doctor and former politician, a man of an impeccable integrity all too rare in Italian politics. Dr. Moro seems devastated by his son's death, but is not eager to talk to the police.

Pamela says: "Not one of my favorite Brunetti stories"
"nice travel guide to venice, weak story"
    Overall

Nice information on Venice, and if accurate an unfortunately sad tale of arrogance and greed in present day Italy. The story line is secondary to the extremely detailed description of the main characters psyche; the ending is flat.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Gaiman’s not just an award-winning author, but a narrator who earns rave reviews – and fields requests from other authors to perform their books, too! Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead....

Guillermo says: "Masterful Fantasy for the Jaded Heart"
    "Entertaining, fun and imagineative."

This authored has managed to put a fresh and clever face on this type of novel. Every bit was interesting, witty and felt real. My only regret was no follow up books and no movie.
    You will enjoy it.

It’s the early 1980s—the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafés on College Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling Derrida and listening to Talking Heads. But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels.

There are short parts in this novel that one revisits the beaty in the writing and character illumination of the authors previous (masterpiece)- Middlesex. However the novel in total in my opinion could have used significant pruning and the story was of limited interest.

The year is 1570, and in the convent of Santa Caterina, in the Italian city of Ferrara, noblewomen find space to pursue their lives under God's protection. But any community, however smoothly run, suffers tremors when it takes in someone by force. And the arrival of Santa Caterina's new novice sets in motion a chain of events that will shake the convent to its core.

    Story

As with the previous 2 books of this genre by the author, this book shines. In many ways I consider it the most complex yet compared to the previous 2 novels, all the action takes place in a relatively small space- in a convent. The characters are 3 dimensional, the politics within the convent mirror the larger political forces of that era. And the description of the honest spiritual yearnings of the nuns is balanced with the psychology of supression, rationalization and sublimation as attempts to maintain their sanity since these women were imprisoned from childhood.
I am very sorry its the last novel; hopefully there will be a 4th.

Gabriel is summoned once more by his masters to undertake what appears to be a routine assignment: travel to Amsterdam to purge the archives of a murdered Dutch terrorism analyst who also happened to be an asset of Israeli intelligence. But once in Amsterdam, Gabriel soon discovers a conspiracy of terror festering in the city's Islamic underground.

Dan says: "One of the very best"
    "exciting, continued twists and turns"
    Overall

This is a good followup story in this series. As usual the authors clean and clear descriptions of the geography allows you to feel like you are there. The geopolitical message continues to be relevent encased into an exciting story.
