This was actually a good story and the narrator was terrific. It would have been a great story if not for the detailed sex scenes, which ruined it for me. I think they're distracting, unnecessary and ridiculous. I, as an intelligent reader, can follow an interesting story line that includes sexual intimacy without the detailed play by play. It's distracts from the story and serves no purpose other than to make a good story suddenly pornographic. I suppose this is how some readers are entertained, but it's not for me. I would recommend this book to other readers, but with a strong warning on the explicit sexual content. I wish books came with ratings like movies. I would have likely avoided this "R" rated selection.
This story had the makings of a good ghost story but lacked any sort of build up, jumped right into hauntings and then sort of fizzled out at the end. The narrator was ok but did terrible female voices. I would rate it PG13 for "f" words.
This was a fun and entertaining story that had me laughing out loud several times. The reader was a little nasally (sp?) sounding, which was slightly annoying, but the story pulled me in right away and got me past it. She may even have been doing it on purpose to lend to the feel of the story. For the most part, the reader did a good job "performing" the book. All the characters were distinguished well from each other. She did great Jersey accents, but sorry, she stinks at any type of Scottish or British accent. The 9 year old character, "Melissa" was a darling. This book would be a fun movie!
I normally don't like abridged audio books because I don't want to miss anything, but this one could stand to be abridged. I actually started listening to it when it first came out and I happily snapped it up. What a disappointment. I was a good half way into the story, but so bored that I finally gave up and started something else. I finally went back to it several months (and books) later simply because I wanted my money's worth. It never really picked up until the end. The ending was fantastic and I want to say worth the wait, but having to muddle through all sorts of pointless details and peripheral stories, which could have easily been left out and not effected the main story, really made it hard to get to the end. The ending was the only redeeming quality, although I appreciate that Ms. Morton can write a book and tell a story without detailed sex scenes and offensive curse words.
It seems good ghost stories or stories about haunting are coming harder to come by. I looked at the reviews on Amazon for this book and it seemed promising. The story itself was good, but what went down hill for me were two things; right off the bat the reader distracted me from the story because although she read ok, I couldn't get past her voice being obviously a quite older woman trying to perform the main character of a young woman in her twenties. She also made the two main male characters sound awful. This was very distracting to me. The detailed sex scenes were, in my opinion, also quite distracting from the main plot and seemed unnecessary. It was enough to know so-and-so had slept with so-and-so without the play by play, nitty gritty details. I found this to be a sad distraction from an otherwise decent story although I forced myself to finish it.
