Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone - and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

Maybe....it was a fun story at first, but about half way through I got very bored. It's definitely a teen lit-type book. If I had that expectation going into it I may have enjoyed it more, but maybe not. It got a bit annoying at times.

It is 1845. New York City forms its first police force. The great potato famine hits Ireland. These two seemingly disparate events will change New York City. Forever.... Timothy Wilde tends bar near the Exchange, fantasizing about the day he has enough money to win the girl of his dreams. But when his dreams literally incinerate in a fire devastating downtown Manhattan, he finds himself disfigured, unemployed, and homeless. His older brother obtains Timothy a job in the newly minted NYPD, but he is highly skeptical of this new "police force".

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. There were sections of this book that moved along, but the story as a whole was very slow moving. I thought the author tried overly hard to develop the characters without really accomplishing the task. There was a bit of interesting history to it, but not enough to really save the story. I'd pass on this one.

Why we think it’s a great listen: If you’ve ever loved a dog - or even patted a dog - this book, told from the perspective of man’s best friend, will tug at your heartstrings...and won’t let go until long after Welch performs the last word. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively and by listening very closely to the words of his master.

This was a great listen, it kept my attention throughout the whole book. I loved hearing the story from the dogs perspective, and really fell in love with this dog's personality. The narrator, as always, was wonderful as well. Definitely recommended!

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

    Overall

I had heard a lot about this series, so decided to give it a try. I'll caveat this by saying that I enjoy good literature, but also enjoy serial authors as well who are pumping out books quickly to suit the masses. I think there are good and bad "serial authors" (not sure if there's a more correct name for them!), but this was one of the worst. I'm writing this review comparing this book to others in similar categoy. I was very disappointed at the flatness of the characters. The character development was poor to say the least. The writing is very simple, and did little to describe the setting where the story took place. My 5 year old nephew would understand the book... I guess I look for a bit more than "story time" in my reading. I'll give it 3 starts because the plot was sort of entertaining, but I do expect a bit more from authors who are as experienced as Butcher. I'm shocked at how many people gave it 5 stars. There are 5 star books that are worthy on many levels (e.g., The Help), and then there are enjoyable stories, which while entertaining, aren't 5 star worthy.

The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

This book took me a few hours to get into, but once I did I was hooked! The narrator is fantastic, and the character development is top notch. There's even a bit of history and environmental threads woven in, so I felt I learned a few things by the end of it! Very highly recommended.

After reading the reviews I was a bit skeptic, but figured some people are just overly sensitive to bad language/writing styles, so I'd give it a shot. But, the bad reviews were pretty much spot on. This book was 6.5 hours of b*tching/moaning/whining/etc. I'm 25 and pretty open, and the language even was starting to irk me after a while. It just seemed unnecessary. The girl in this book reminds me of that friend who will call you and whine about this or that, and eventually you hit ignore and don't answer the phone because you're not in the mood to hear to it again. I kept listening because I thought she'd reach some sort of closure in the end, but nothing really changed as a result of all the cooking. She was still the same miserable person at the end of the book as when she started. I would skip this listen and opt for another title.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

This was the first SK book that I've "read", and I really enjoyed it. He really brings the many characters to life and you start feeling emotions towards each of them depending on their role in the story. I did not find the narrator annoying as some others did, in fact, I thought he did a great job, especially considering the many characters that had large parts in this story. There were times where he could have picked up the pace, and I wish the ending was explained a bit more, but overall a worthy listen!

Young Nicholas Hook is dogged by a curse, haunted by what he has failed to do and banished for what he has done. A wanted man in England, he is driven to fight as a mercenary archer in France, where he finds two things he can love: his instincts as a fighting man, and a girl in trouble. Together they survive the notorious massacre at Soissons, an event that shocks all Christendom. With no options left, Hook heads home to England, where his capture means certain death.

    Overall

This was an interesting story, but I found it rather slow. The build up took about 3/4 of the book, then it finally picked up for the last 4 hours of listening. I found the music a bit commical, it was added in 5-6 places throughout the story, but didn't really make sense or go along with the action of the story... "Someone is twiddling their thumbs" --insert dark war music-- The narrator was great, however I found it to be a difficult story to get into.

When his son Rowan was diagnosed with autism, Rupert Isaacson was devastated, afraid he might never be able to communicate with his child. But when Isaacson, a lifelong horseman, rode their neighbor's horse with Rowan, Rowan improved immeasurably. He was struck with a crazy idea: why not take Rowan to Mongolia the one place in the world where horses and shamanic healing intersected?

I thought this was a wonderful story. The author is also the narrator, and thus he is really able to portray the emotions of what he wrote. The journey to Mongolia adds many different facets to the story; you learn things about the culture and history of Mongolia as the story progresses. It's truely touching and I would highly recommend the book to anyone.
