In the frigid waters off the Arctic Ocean, north of Greenland, the anti-whaling ship The Sentinel, and her crew face off against a harpoon ship in search of Humpback whales. When the two ships collide and a suspicious explosion sends both ships to the bottom, the crews take refuge on what they think is a peninsula attached to the mainland, but is actually an island, recently freed from a glacial ice bridge. Jane Harper leads the two crews, who must work together to defend themselves against an ancient evil upon which the modern stories of both zombies and vampires are based.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Having a narrator that could express the different emotions the characters portray.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story didnt go into many details. everything was a very quick description, i couldn't get the feeling that i was a part of the story. I wasnt able to trully picture what the characters and surroundings looked and felt like.

What didn’t you like about Emily Beresford’s performance?

I am not a fan of any female narrator. She, like others makes ever male voice sound the same. She cant get characters emotions to come through. A male narrator does better female voices than a female narrator doing male voices.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

i was disappointed. the summary of the story sounded great. It could have been a longer more detailed story.

The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct and the half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind, but the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory. Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on Earth....

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    No one

What do you think your next listen will be?

    anything else

What didn’t you like about Rupert Degas’s performance?

it was very difficult to tell characters apart

What character would you cut from Metro 2033?

all of the side characters that didnt have anything to do with the story

    Any additional comments?

This book made absolutley no sense. You had multiple characters that had nothing to do with the story. The story had many different characters that had nothing to do with the events. They didnt help progress the story along. You would start to get to know someone, then all of the sudden they were gone. Maybe they will be back at the end of the story to help the main character along, NOPE. The story was pointless. It would start to bring you in one direction and then it would change everything. You never got to see or interact with "Dark Ones" Im not sure who was the good guys or the bad guys. Then all of the sudden when things start to happen It is over. Worste book i have ever listened to. This story had so much potential and could have gone in so many different directions, but it only went one way, into a dead end. HORRIBLE

Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books—but we are real.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

i think this book would be good for children between the ages of 10 & 12

Would you ever listen to anything by Pittacus Lore again?

    no.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Neil Kaplan?

Any one would be better. Bronson Pinchot or Oliver Wyman are the best narrators out there and would have done an excellent job narrating this book.

What character would you cut from I Am Number Four?

I dont think i would cut any of the characters. Its the voices of the characters that need to be changed.

    Any additional comments?

i may have been able to stomach the book if it wasnt for the narrator. He gave the characters voices a cartoon like quality. Example is the nerdy friend, He has a constant whiny, nasally voice. It was absolutely horrible.

Would you try another book from Thom Brannan and D. L. Snell and/or Jonathan Davis?

Not if they are like this book. It was like the authors asked eachother " what is the easiest, quickest and most boring way we can get werewolves and zombies together. It could have been a good story, it just needed another 200 pages to explain everything. Never explained how the werewolf project started or what they actually looked like when then transformed. One part it seems like they are on 2 feet and massive, then it seems like they are just large size dogs. Never said what it was that really made one an alpha, no details just said alpha doesnt need shots and the others do. The whole zombie part of the story didnt even need to take place. should have been left out.
The narrator was fine. he was able to make changes in the characters voices and express their feelings.

Would you ever listen to anything by Thom Brannan and D. L. Snell again?

Not if they are like this story. see above comment.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Nothing. I think the narrator did a fine job, especially considering what he was narrating.

What character would you cut from Pavlov’s Dogs?

The zombies. Could have had a better book or made 2 books if you separated the zombies and the werewolves.

Bloodthirsty monsters are emerging from the Antarctic ice, the same creatures that once stalked the battlegrounds of World War I. Back then, a group of soldiers valiantly fought off the beasts—and were never seen again. A century later, an elite military squad stands between civilization and the mysterious return of the enemy.

What disappointed you about A Line in the Ice?

The narrator was horrible. I hate to admit it but a female narrator cannot do a male voice. If it wasnt for the horrible accents the narrator gave to people, i wouldnt have been able to tell who was who. The story itself could have been alot better. there needed to be more back story to the rift, characters and the other side. too much time was spent in the ice base and not enough time about the rift, the enimies and the other creatures. this could have been easily made into a series.

Has A Line in the Ice turned you off from other books in this genre?

it makes me alot more hesitant to buy a book that has a female narrator.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

you couldnt hear the different expressions that each character experienced. it was like she was struggling to just keep their voices the same and was unable to express anything else.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

huge disappointment. the summary of the book sounded awesome. but after 5 minutes of listening to the narrator i was already disappointed.
